Interview with Tim Gerets
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Mixing is not mastering. Mixing is 80% of the end result. You can fix all problems in the mixing stage. So don't hire a mastering engineer if your track needs to be properly mixed before.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: The production of a song is never finished. Sometimes you need to consider it 'done' and let someone else do the mixing & mastering for optimal results.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Computer, iPhone, speakers, that's it !
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I'm working as an audio engineer for more than 10 years when I started producing Trance & progressive music in my bedroom. Now, I'm an audio geek spending most of my time in my new 2.0 studio.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Armin Van Buuren because he is the most talented producer for so many years.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Eq & compression are the most powerfull tools when mixing & mastering. Learn them and experience as much as you can!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I work on all Eletronic dance music genres. From house to hardstyle. To name a few genres: House, techno, future bass, trap, trance, deep house, progressive, slap house, D'n'B, etc.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Mixing is my strongest skill because 80% of the end result depends on the mixing stage. The last 20% is all about the mastering and some secret sauce I add to all my clients projects!
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring clarity, punch, stereo balance, frequency balance and emotion to the song. Ready for radio & label release.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I usually received all stems from the client and then immediately start working on the mixing stage. Only when the client is 100% happy with the mixdown, I proceed to the mastering stage.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio is a dedicated room fully treated to be able to maximize my mixing & mastering skills.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Armin Van Buuren, Hans Zimmer, Above & Beyond, Tiësto, Paul Kalkbrenner, and so many more in different Electronic music genres.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I do mixing & mastering for clients all over the world
