Interview with Jan Erlandsson

  1. Q: What's your typical work process?

  2. A: I start by listen a lot to the current music genre, in order to find in the right mood. After that I start to sing along to the actual tune to get ideas of riffs or backgrounds. Next step I decide what instrument will be on lead. If I arrange for others I put everything in notes (not necessary if it's only me playing). I often put harmonies in the section , but I can equally keep it simple and unison.

  3. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  4. A: Most of the productions from Dr. John, Delbert McClinton, Willy deVille, Muscle Shoals productions and also old school rock and rhythm & blues like Fats Domino, Wynonie Harris, Neville Brothers, Professor Longhair, NRBQ, Ann Peebles, Bettye LaVette...

  5. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  6. A: Big ears. This means that I understand the musical challenge in the genre.

  7. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  8. A: Horns in the right style.

  9. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  10. A: I write and play arrangements for 2, 3 or 4 horns, often in genres like rhythm & blues, rock and blue but also pop music.

  11. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  12. A: Tenorsax Selmer Mk6. Altosax Selmer Mk7, Soprano sax Yanagisawa Elimona. Barytone sax Yamaha.
