Interview with Ben Spiess
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I would definitely recommend my mentor Brendan Duffey.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I don't think there is a correct answer. If it sounds good, it sounds good. I would love to have analog gear but I'm perfectly fine with in the box.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise that I will help you achieve your sonic vision and translate what is in your head into the production.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love being able to hear new music and solve problems in a technical and artistic manner.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: I would take an Shure SM7B because of it's versatility, my laptop (DAW and plugins included of course), a guitar, a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2, and a pair Beyerdynamic DT 770 headphones.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I like to focus on the emotion and attitude of a song.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Always have a plan. Don't just reach for a plugin. Set yourself up with what you want to achieve technically and artistically.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I would say my strongest skill is my ability to critically listen to a piece of music.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I mainly provide mixing and mastering services.
