Mr. Anderson
Interview with Tone Da Boss
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I was most proud of my song Victory Lap. The prior year we released a song called Give Me My Ring that got picked up by the Golden State Warriors when they became NBA champions, we made Victory Lap as a single with hopes of it going to the NFL. It made it and was selected as the song for their SuperBowl parade.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Working on an album with a book and short film attached to it.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: J. Limm as recording engineer for the best mix and masters. Kel Anderson for beats and production.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital, because we should always adapt and grow. Technology is meant to always advance, but I do appreciate analog too.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise is to ALWAYS leave them satisfied. A good experience, transparent communication, and always give them my best.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love creating alternate realities with every song I write or record. Some songs I do is my true self but the funnest ones are being someone else or seeing things from someone else’s perspective.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: I’m commonly asked can I sing. I can with autotune and melodyne.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: People think I’m only interested in Hip Hop because that’s what I’m most known for. But I ghost write more R&B then I write hip hop. For male and female artist.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I always ask does my offer work for you because I know we all have different budgets, have different opinions on backend credits, and Im flexible.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Feel free to ask anything. Whether it’s a request your not comfortable with or any revisions, Im an open book, I don’t get offended by criticism, and I’m always down to experiment and challenge myself.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My iMac, my Newman microphone, an Apollo twin, my mic stand, and iPhone to write notes in
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I’ve been doing music 20 years. It started as an artist, transitioned to Dj, then manager, and when the world shifted I took it back to where I started as an artist and received the most success any local artist I’ve ever encounter.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Anthem, everything I record is big. Big energy, big vocals, and big inpact
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Lil Wayne, Drake and Eminiem. Because it would force me to rise to the occasion as well as give me the challenge I’ve been looking for my entire career.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Be original. Don’t be afraid to be different and try something now, but also don’t be afraid to be inspired by something or someone else.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Hip Hop, R&B, punk rock
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Writing. I can write anything for anyone at any time. I’m a creative, a story teller, and can get into character no matter what the topic is.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring energy, excitement, and fun when applicable. However I’m also capable of painting a picture, telling a story and capturing the right vibe for whatever the song needs.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Lyrics flow to me all day every day. I can’t turn it off. So when I hear a beat or get a topic to write to its natural, it just comes out and my energy brings it to life when I get in the studio.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I record out of a quarter million dollar studio in Iowa that recently won best studio at the Iowa Music Awards.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Lil Wayne, Drake, Kendrick Lamar and J. cole
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Rapping, writing to concepts and beats, ghost writing for other artist, recording pre written songs with my voice and style.
