Interview with DKQ MUSIC
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I use Ableton Live Studio Suit 10. I have a long list of the top industry standard plug-ins. My main house mic is a Neumann U87 that I run through a Neve 1073 to a UAD Apollo Twin. I primarily work "in the box" (on my computer).
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm working on a 5 song EP for an artist that sounds like Adele and Amy Winehouse. She will be announcing her project in 2022.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. Analog for warm and buttery highs. Digital for convinces.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: It is my commitment and mission to make sure you're 100% happy with your song. My job is make your vision come to life and I will give your song the tender love and care it deserves!
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The goose bumps and the chills.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What is your end goal with music? What artists do you look up to? What inspires you to make music?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Definitely have a clear and thought out direction as to what you'd like your music to sound like. This will ultimately help me nail your vision. I prefer a reference track along with a demo or voice memo.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Computer, Neve 1073, UAD TWIN, U47, Keyboard
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Resist the temptation to add high frequencies.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I am very inspired by Ian Kirkpatrick's work especially on "Future Nostalgia" by Dua Lipa. But overall inspired by anything that makes you FEEL.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Full scale production from the ground up. That includes sometimes performing all instrumentation and programming.
