Greg Mate on SoundBetter

Dedicated and working hard to write music that convey emotions. Interested in collaboration - especially in Montreal - and Sync opportunities https://linktr.ee/gregmatemusic

Composer, Songwriter & Keyboard player Greg Mate after 2 years of classical piano lessons was promptly kicked out at the age of 10 wanting to play the drums instead - now playing guitar would be great.

Years later he got his first used Electric Piano from a buddy. “I had lent him a hockey helmet, which he’d worn out, so he gave me his keyboard."

Mate’s debut EP, Nothing Is As Short As Never (February 2022) introduces a soft rock sound through various versions of a power ballad by the same name. Double Cheek Kisses 80s Euro Pop single is getting great traction. He is very excited about his imminent 2024 releases.

When asked what he wants to accomplish with his music, he says “I want to write music that tells a story and that hopefully others can relate to and enjoy.”

The Sync world fascinates him as well, and he is working to share his songs through licensing to help others tell their stories.

Mate loves collaborating with other musicians. “I play well with others”. In December '23 I played in my first a live jam in a couple of years, and really have the bug again.

His positivity & creativity are set to challenge the status quo and help listeners find hope in a world that can sometimes feel hopeless. And with the quality and breadth of genres that his music offers, there will surely be something in Greg Mate’s growing catalog for everyone.

Greg was great to work with. Very clear with his needs and I think we hit it out of the park!

Interview with Greg Mate

  1. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  2. A: The music. I have listened to music all day long, and I want to do that every day.

  3. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  4. A: 10+ years playing the keys, 2 years of songwriting.

  5. Q: How would you describe your style?

  6. A: Easy going, hardworking, dedicated.

  7. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  8. A: Record everything!

  9. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  10. A: I don't want to write sad songs, but I do. I want to write upbeat rock but I haven't. My second EP coming out March-ish 2022 will be mostly (3 out of 4 songs) happy. I'm working on an 80's EP.

  11. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  12. A: I can frequently play a few notes on my keyboard and the music starts to flow.

  13. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  14. A: I'm a team player that enjoys learning and sharing. I'm creative - good thing eh? - and am able to look at things from a different angle.

  15. Q: What's your typical work process?

  16. A: I tend to write music before the lyrics. Then the music tells me what words to write, usually based on a theme I have in mind. I have a bunch of song titles, like everyone else I'm sure.
