I asked Malik to add backing and lead guitars to an indie song with a blues and classic rock vibe, and he did an awesome job, giving me 5 tracks with a variety of solid rhythm and melodic lead parts to incorporate into my song.

Interview with Malik Ati
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Some of the question can be : the overall goal of your song, have you a reference track, or the reference guitar sound that you want me to get ideas and inspiration from, tell me everything you have in mind ,why did you create this song, did you think of someone or something, do you want make people dance, cry, laugh , make love ? what freedom do you give me in the creation of guitar tracks for your song ?
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would like to be part of a team of producers/ composers for a top world artist. I love creating melodies on lyrics, and i appreciate collaboration between artists.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I know how to put myself at the service of the artistic work; I understand what an artist wants even if he doesn't have the precise words to explain it.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: - My Martin acoustic 00015 - My 1974 Fender stratocaster - The full Rolling Stone Mobile - an ipod full of music - and ... a radio transmitter lol -
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: All the music of today.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: 1. have a clear idea of the direction of the project and the goals of the artist I am collaborating with before making a single note 2.Enter the creation phase and put all the assets to make it go well.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: 1.Allow a little time to pass between recording and mixing. 2.Tell yourself that what you do has quality and that there is room for you in the musical world.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I put my talent, my emotion, my technical qualities and especially my singularity at the service of the song. Whether my role is that of composer, musician or producer.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Pro tools / Ableton live // Universal Audio // Neumann monitoring// Neumann and Seinheiser microphones // Fender stratocaster 1974 - a rare model without tremolo the sound is wider than the other Stratocaster // Tom Anderson 1986 // Martin 00015 // Takamine // Yamaha etc.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I am very eclectic in my musical taste : when there is quality and emotion its ok for me i love Blues , Electronic, Rock music , Funk , Classical jazz and world music. I love to play , compose and produce and I love to dance !!
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: My usual job is to take charge of a project. Compose, produce, coach the artist and lead the team of musicians and finally produce the recording session
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Often the client has trouble expressing what he wants for his song or his film, we discuss a lot then finally he asks me: "do you understand what I want ? " my answer is .. yes - a real yes cause I know how to put myself at the service of the artistic work; I understand what an artist wants even if he doesn't have the precise words to explain it.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: The last project in which I had an important role was that of composing music for a documentary for the producer amart film (amartfilms.com) and leading the team of musicians. Among the musicians were the international pianist Frank Woste and other top musicians. I am proud to have done a good job, to have had the confidence of the producer who has invested a lot of money in the project and above all I am proud of the quality that my music has taken, interpreted by excellent musicians at my side.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Music is my passion, and serving it is my ambition. I will never work on a project, a song, a film etc if I don't feel that with my talent I will be able to contribute something. my first advice is, I just listened to your song and I am convinced that I can answer your request, and be able to bring something that will bring added value to your song. So try me and trust me ... I'm sure something good will come out of our collaboration
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: As a guitarist I am comfortable with all the music of today including pop, funk, r'n'b, Edm including metal or reggae. As a composer I love to create music and melodies based on lyrics by authors, I also love to creat music on images. As a producer I love to start from scratch and manage to satisfy the sponsors. I know how to manage a team of artists (if there is one).
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: That's over twenty as a professional artist. I started music very early.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: 1. I am the guitar trainer of a young french actress, Marguerite Thiam, who plays the role of a guitarist in a Netflix series. 2. I produce an electronic music track for a short french film which will be presented at the Festival de Cannes " la quinzaine des realisateurs". 3.I just did guitar parts for two songs for a Japanese Soundbetter client.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Using the best of both the analog and digital domains can provide a great workflow. Nothing beats a good old fender tube amp that has heated up well, Of course we all know that Digital gives ease.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I will put all my artistic qualities and my emotion at the service of your song. I'll take every note played and be proud of them.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I like to mix passion and work, I like meeting other artists and - when possible - travel. I like to be appreciated for my human and artistic qualities.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: My job seems easy to do for some but they don't know that there are years of work, hundreds of sleepless nights, hours and hours working on projects
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I heard about Steve Wilmot for his work with Pater Gabriel and OneRepublic, so its great to find him here in SoundBetter !
