Hannah Phillips on SoundBetter

I write and sing killer topline lyrics, melodies and harmonies for all popular music genres.

Hi, I'm Hannah! I'm a session topliner, songwriter and vocalist. I am based in the UK, however I work with several clients in LA and across America.

I write for any project and for a variety of musical genres including EDM, pop, rock and indie. I have a unique voice that has been likened to Lorde, Kate Bush and Birdie. I enjoy writing both thoughtful lyrics and catchy hit hooks, so take a listen and see if I'm right for your track!

Interview with Hannah Phillips

  1. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  2. A: I excel in combining unique and thoughtful lyrics with melodies that get stuck in your head.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I'm working on several EP projects simultaneously at the moment, branching into different genres. I'm working with an artist called Dreambender where we've created a new genre of music - murder folk synth!

  5. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  6. A: The variety of work. Every project is so different and it really allows me to flex my creative muscles and challenge myself in different ways. If I really enjoy a project, I'll get super passionate about it. When complete, you have a tangible product to be proud of that's a direct result of your passion. It's pretty great!

  7. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  8. A: From the average music listener, maybe that popular chart music is basic and easy to write. Writing something that's catchy, current and not cheesy is probably the most difficult but rewarding part of my work. All the respect to pop writers.

  9. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  10. A: What is your time-frame? Do you have any pre-existing ideas of how you want the vocal to sound/what you would like the lyrics to be about? Can you provide a reference track/artist? Do I have free reign to get creative?

  11. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  12. A: Have a conversation first and make sure you outline exactly what you're looking for. Have reference tracks in mind that exhibit a similar style to what you're looking for. Don't be afraid to ask for a demo snippet.

  13. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  14. A: Guitar, replacement strings, pen knife, duct tape, matches - did I take this question too literally?

  15. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  16. A: I have been writing my own music for 12 years and writing toplines professionally for a year and a half.

  17. Q: How would you describe your style?

  18. A: Ethereal indie pop.

  19. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  20. A: Bonobo. His music is inspiring and take you on a journey. I'd love to see what genius thing he'd do with my vocal on one of his tracks.

  21. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  22. A: Carry a note book and write down every musical idea that comes to mind. As soon as possible get it roughly recorded. You never know when it will come in handy.

  23. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  24. A: I work most often on music within the indie & folk pop genres, however I've also written and sung for several EDM tracks.

  25. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  26. A: I bring catchy but unique melodies and lyrics, as well as a distinct indie pop vocal.

  27. Q: What's your typical work process?

  28. A: I work to deadlines, however within that timeframe, creativity ebbs and flows. To me, in order to achieve a truly catchy song, lyrics and melody are inherently connected and should influence each another organically. I will often spend a whole day on a single song, writing both the lyrics and topline melody in full. I will then send it to my client for their opinion and input before I come back to it a couple of days later with a fresh mind to do all the fine tuning; sometimes start over if either of us are not happy. Depending on what the client desires, I like to have a back-and-forth relationship where we can test out different options in order to construct the best outcome.

  29. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  30. A: I record in a sound proofed home studio set-up with a quality mic and software.

  31. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  32. A: I am heavily inspired by songwriters & bands like Lorde, George Fitzgerald, Aurora, Years & Years, Billie Eilish - I thrive writing melodious, catchy toplines with something a little different about them. Other artists that inspire me are Bonobo, Caribou.

  33. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  34. A: I write and sing topline vocals.
