Hello! My name is Jonny and I'm a recording and mixing engineer, and music producer from Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK. I specialise in rock, indie, and pop music and I'm equally comfortable working with new and upcoming bands, as well as those who have been around the block a few times.
I work primarily from Blast Recording Studios in Newcastle Upon Tyne, a fantastic facility in the city's creative hub which features a fantastic SSL console, and analogue equipment from the likes of Neve, Urei, Chandler, and Empirical Labs
So if you have songs ready to mix, would like to work with a producer or would like some help with your arrangement, get in touch and let's work together!

Jonny is such a pleasure to work with, he is kind and he just gets it so right. He is just so good at what he does! Love!
I have worked in the Studio with Jonny on a number of occasions over the past three years. Each time, he has proven himself to be a hard worker and has been an absolute pleasure to work with. Always taking on our ideas and happy to input his own when asked. Jonny always gives mixes back in a timely fashion and makes any changes with haste; if there are any to be made. Jonny is, and always will be our go to engineer. Not only would I recommend him to anyone, anyone would be lucky to have him.
Jonny worked with us on our debut album and then more recently on our new singles, he is a pleasure to work with and really took on board what we wanted and delivered great results. We had a great time working with Jonny and we’d fully recommend his work to any indie/ alternative/ punk/ rock bands and musicians looking for a great quality sound and an enjoyable environment to work in.
I’ve worked with Jonny on and off the board, he runs an organised session and gainfully puts forward constructive ideas and suggestions as well as achieving a terrific sounding well mixed end result
Interview with Jonny Burgess
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I've just finished tracking and editing a project for an indie band called Uncanny Valley, and have some mix revisions to complete for GLASSPHANTOMS
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: It depends on what you're looking for - Hati is a top songwriter if you need help in that department!
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: To deliver a project professionally!
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Working with new people, hearing lots of new music
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That it is a technical role! Its not, its about the song and working with people
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Don't be shy! I'm open to most kinds of music, if it's something I don't think I can help you with I'll be honest. Other than that, tell me what you're looking for, reference tracks really help!
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: A computer with Pro Tools, and some good monitoring. Probably some microphones. Not sure! Water?
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started out in bands as I'd imagine most people do, and then got really interested in music production at around 16 years old. From then I went on to study a degree in the subject and then work professionally, which I've been doing for over 10 years now.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Clear, energetic, and powerful when needed. I like songs that are quite dynamic, with quieter verses and huge choruses.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Probably somebody like Jimmy Eat World who I grew up listening to, the songs are catchy and powerful, a really good balance of commercial rock music.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: The perfect sound isn't always the right sound, it depends on what works for the song
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I tend to work mostly with rock, pop-rock, and alternative rock bands, but I'll turn my hand to most things!
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I think my strongest skill is finding clarity in the song, whether by utilising tools such as EQ to create a sense of space, or whether it's more about de-cluttering an arrangement that allows the song to speak better.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I like to bring energy and creativity into the process. I'm a good judge of knowing when to introduce an idea of my own that can help to elevate the song to the next level
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both! I like to record with analogue, but mixing wise I like to work in the box. 'Save' 'load' and 'undo' are very underrated tools!
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Do you know what all of these buttons do?
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I usually want to know what music prospective clients are listening to, I want to know what they're in to so that I have a better idea of the direction to take the song in
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Usually I work quite fast. If I'm recording, I like to work with quite a bit of outboard, and I want to get the recording as close to the finished product as possible. When mixing I prefer to work in the box, its good to be able to walk away, get some perspective, and come back later.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work from a very well treated recording studio which features an SSL AWS 900+ console, and outboard from Neve, Urei, Empiracal Labs, and many others
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I grew up on Jerry Finn records, and love the work of Tom Lord-Alge, Andy Wallace, and Rich Costey
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Given the demand for near constent content from artists these days, I typically work on relitively short projects, sometimes single by single, or on EP's, I do enjoy getting stuck into an album from time to time! Usually I'll record, mix, and produce the whole project, but equally happy doing any combination of those three things!
