Mastering is easy to get wrong in a world of DIY productions and ever changing loudness standards on streaming services such as Spotify. One of the reasons I got into mastering as a producer and engineer myself was the lacklustre affordable options out there, many of which are shoved in your face constantly these days.

I worked with one prominent figure who’s master added nasty distortion to my track, and they seemingly either didn’t hear it or couldn’t be bothered to fix it when I pointed it out.

Plus there is no shortage of robots that master your music in a lifeless way while adding bizarre artifacts that you can’t prevent.

I like to approach mastering as a way to add some extra character, polish, and loudness to a track without adding anything nasty like distortion or artifacts from over limited and clipped tracks. I actually barely touch a limiter and get as much loudness as possible without using one to kill the punch of your track.
