Interview with One Sebastian
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Carlos Vives' "Masters en Parranda" with a whole bunch of very exciting collaborations such as Llane, Alex Rose, Gusi, Emilia Mernes, Cheo Gallego and many more. I was the main producer and also co-wrote on most of the tracks.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Nick López's upcoming EP.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Having grown up in church, I've been involved in music ever since I can remember. I’m 31 years old and have been in the industry since I was 21. I’ve worked with (and for) artists in the likes of Sebastian Yatra, Dalex, Arevalo, Nick López, Juanse, among many others and for both small and major labels such as Universal Music and New Vintage Artists. I’ve also been able to tour the world and play along many Latin Top 40 artists such as Sebastian Yatra, Carlos Vives, Luis Fonsi, etcetera at venues such as Staples Center, The O2 Arena, Auditorio Nacional and such.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I'm crazy about being disruptive. I believe uniqueness is the one factor that makes the most difference in a song.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Most of the time I'll start from scratch (Songwriting) and work our way up to a finished record. I'm always looking to work with the artist in finding a unique essence in their sound. Oftentimes too, I'll get an acapella track and build the production on top of it.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Daremixing.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. Every time.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I won’t be satisfied unless you’re blown away.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The possibility to create.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: No producer in the world knows how to 'make' a hit (that's the label's job), but we can make an incredible record that's timeless and makes the artist super proud.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: How open-minded are you in regards to the song we're gonna be working on?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Let me take care of your needs and work WITH you in getting you to where you should be. I won’t be satisfied unless you’re blown away.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Discrete 8, Neumann U87, Adam A7X, Yamaha Montage 6, MacBook Pro.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Forever 31.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Khalid, mainly because I feel like his music is extremely raw and honest.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Who said the chorus has to always sound big?
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Pop with every variant you can possibly imagine.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: One that is often undervalued in this industry: communication.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Create, explore, execute, perfect, repeat.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a perfectly acoustic set up room which I think has helped me take my sound-choice criteria to the next level and also improved my understanding of what a rough mix should be before sending to mix.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Pharrell Williams, Tainy, Rick Rubin, Josh Godwin, Omer Fedi, Max Martin and many more.
