Interview with Need You Music
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I am proud to have worked with rap artist NF for a live event and bringing the many live elements of his performance to life with an exciting quality sound that captured the attention of the audience for an exciting show.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am currently producing an album for my solo artist project!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital because I can have so much gear virtually on the go that produces almost perfect equal quality as the analog gear.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I will always give 100% when attempting to bring your vision to life.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Capturing a vision and bringing it to life.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Q: What inspires me when making music and creating art? A: I enjoy capturing a vision, a story, that can be told even without any words. I think art is so powerful and music can have words, emotions, and stories told through sound. I can alter someones life and inspire them with sound. Thats inspiring as hell.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That I only produce EDM. I used to play in a band and I was the mixing engineer for anything we recorded. I have plenty of experience with live sound production and live event production. My background is diverse and I don't limit myself to one style though I most often make EDM.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What is your vision for this project, what is your budget, and what is your deadline.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: I would recommend having a good idea of where you would like to go with a song. If you have a mood board, reference tracks, or artists that inspire you, any piece of information is crucial to ensure that we have a clear vision for the project and where we would like the results to conclude.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: I would take my Mac of course, Barefoot FootPrint01s, SSL Fusion, Neve Master Buss Compressor, and Apollo Twin Mk II
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been producing professionally for 11+ years now.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Energetic, Heavy, and Melodic
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with Space Laces because their quality of sound design and mix is exceptional.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Always listen to your music on multiple systems so that you can hear how it sounds to your consumers. While it may sound good in your studio, it might not sound as good on your fans airpods or car stereos. Always spend some time making sure you're not phasing and producing quality sound for all systems.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: EDM/Pop/Dubstep
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Mixing
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring an exciting story that breathes life into any project that I work on. I absolutely love doing what I do and thus every project is new and exciting and engaging. I work quickly and efficiently while producing extremely good quality results. My passion for musical arts continues to only grow with each project I work on.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: When working on producing music I tend to determine first whether there is a particular vision with a mood board or thought process with visual art associated with the song. From this point I typically start with a melodic motif that then sets the overall concept for the song up. From there I build the rest of the song typically focusing on percussion after the melodic motif has been developed. I like to really spend a bit of time setting up the mid/side balancing of the track and adjusting sounds in virtual space so that the stereo mix is very balanced and pleasing. Which leads me to my mixing/mastering workflow. When mixing I like to start with the main focus of the song. In vocal driven songs, I start by setting up the vocals in the mix and then bringing everything else up around it and balancing the harshness/loudness of certain elements. I tend to use FabFilter Pro Q3 to carve out/boost necessary frequencies to balance certain elements in a mix. After balancing levels, I focus more on shaping the stereo mix and placing certain elements in their appropriate spaces. After spending time cleaning up the mid/side mix I then proceed to mastering where I focus on bringing everything up to proper loudness for streaming and for performing.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I currently have a studio that I built into an extra room in my home setup with Barefoot FootPrint01s, SSL Fusion, Neve Master Buss Compressor, BetterMaker Mastering Limiter, Antelope Pure 2 Master Converter, Apollo Twin Mk II, and an Avalon VT-737SP.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I am incredibly inspired by Flume, Louis The Child, and Dave Pensado.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I mostly work on mixing and ghost production.
