Interview with David Tallarico
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What's your story?
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I'm very open to exploring your ideas. My own ideas will inevitably come through, but my focus is on ensuring that you're heard and we get the sound you're after.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: If you like my answers to these questions so far, YOU! Its important to me that my collaborators "fit" with me, and I "fit" with them. If you like what you're seeing send me a message!
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Of course! Know you're tools and craft so that you're not bound by technical limitations. But never put your tools of craftsmanship before artistry. In other words, learn the rules, then break them :)
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I care much less about genre and much more about the artist themselves. If our personalities fit, we can make something amazing. The genres I've found myself working in primarily are hip-hop, pop, and folk music.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: The ability to understand what makes a song work, and make that feature shine.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio is called The Beatcave! It's located just outside Vancouver, BC. I've got a nicely treated and tuned control room, and two iso booths. I keep the gear somewhat minimalistic, but I make sure EVERYTHING is up to high standards. I have a tech that I have sent gear to have modified if it's not up to snuff. I'm very proud of the setup but the best part is that it all works together to get out of the way of the art! I keep it tidy so we can focus on getting the best tracks possible.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Max Martin is a huge inspiration to me, as is his main mixing engineer Serban Ghenea. They've topped the charts for a long time and continue to make relevant music to a super high standard. I aim to bring that sense of professionalism and quality to my customers.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Clients usually come in with a song that is part-way finished, and I help them to take it across the finish line. Often that means helping with arrangement, composing, engineering and mixing, but I also offer these services independently!
