Interview with In Shadows Records LLC
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Analog, Analog mastering uses physical, outboard mastering gear to process the mix. Digital mastering uses software. Analog mastering will introduce a sound into the recording which is generated from the analog circuitry of the equipment. It will thicken the recording and all the instruments within it, often times accentuating upper harmonic. I however, work with a digital mixer which works for me very well.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Typically, once ive received the project(Stems), I will organize the files into my custom template which i feel suits the project best. So organize, Time align each note, midi pattern on all tracks, reamp guitars needed, Set levels, begin mixing, Mastering, give finished product to customer. If recording, set up template, record Drums, or program them whatever is requested. Then guitars are next, followed by vocals. Usually separate days for instruments and vocals.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: In Shadows We Rise EP. I recorded all the instruments, programed the drums, collabed with other artists.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Multiple projects, one metal, one rock artist. They both have beautiful voices and love the their guitar work in the songs.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: EOL Studios - Mike. He worked on a project of mine a while back and did an outstanding job. I highly recommend their services
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: When you hire us to work on your audio project, you will receive very high quality audio that you will be highly satisfied with.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Seeing the reaction of the client after hearing their song for the first time
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Are there any discounts for doing multiple songs with your studio? No, because we would love to offer discounts, but the amount of work that goes into every project is unbelievable. You get what you pay for and we offer very Competitive pricing.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: tracks need to be mixed and mastered by someone entirely different. Most music producers are quite able to render that service, but it seems like some artists like to divide the task. There’s nothing wrong with getting another pair of ears involved, but it’s not obligatory
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Biggest question, What is your budget? How many songs are you wanting to mix/master or record? What services will you need, mixing/mastering, recording or both?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: look for a producer that is not overcharging, has quality portfolio, and will put his all into your project.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Guitar, Studio monitors, computer, interface.......hoping if there was electricity, I could still record and make music
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have playing in bands for over 10 years, my instrument is guitar. I have been seriously recording/mixing/mastering/producing artists for over 4 years now. I enjoy every minute of it. I went from a career to deciding to own my own business making artists songs come alive. Each project is a fun unique experience to take on.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: intense, Unique, I think every engineer does things differently which is what makes each engineer unique.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Rock and metal Artists, We just love the feel of a good rock or metal song
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: When recording your own tracks make sure you gain stage before you start. Clipping can ruin any recording and is not fun to work with.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Rock and metal
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: We do mixing, mastering, and recording rock and metal the strongest. As our engineers are skilled in all avenues of music, we can handle any genre
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Our studio brings quality production to the song. We look at each project as if we were working on our own project. We will bring the song or project to industry standards. We want your project to stand out as it represents our studio.
