Interview with Michael Askew
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started learning to play guitar when I was 14 and within a few months I was already in my first band which I fronted. I kept developing my skills throughout my teenage years and then decided to move to Brighton (UK) when I was 19 to pursue a career in music. I studied at BIMM specialising in songwriting and developed a passion for music production throughout my studies. Whilst studying I formed my next musical project - Island Club. In late 2020 I decided to start my new project Good Peach which we've already released a handful of singles. Alongside this I have been working with other artists, developing and recording their music and growing a catalogue of songs.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Tune your drums to the key of your track! Such an important aspect to getting everything to gel and feel cohesive.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: It changes song to song, I think it depends upon where the seed of inspiration comes from. Sometimes the seed will stem from the drums and other times it will seed from a vocal melody or lyrics. I think it's important to notice and optimise when there is a vibe which everyone is excited by and explore that as much as possible. All in all I'd say focus on writing a great song and then build the production around that.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work primarily all in the box (laptop) but have also had some experience in working with analogue gear. I have an extensive collection of VST's and 3rd party plugins to make everything sound juicy and wonderful! Currently using Yahamas HS8's and loving them. Have a great collection of electric guitars, bass guitars, acoustic guitars, guitar pedals, and microphones.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I love listening to all genres of music, but I mostly listen too and am inspired by pop music. Some favourites at the moment would be; BENEE, Charli XCX (A.G.COOK), Slow Thai, Sycco, Tame Impala. Also massively admire writers and producers like Max Martin, Mike Crossey, Josh Fountain.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Mostly I play the roll of the producer, focusing on arrangement, structure, and sounds but also love jumping in on the songwriting side as well. I love working closely with the client in order to bring their vision alive.
