Interview with Dave Crawford

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Maddox Jones first album called Believe It which was released in 2022 was a milestone piece for me and I did a lot of the production/recording work and some mixes on it.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I am currently producing an album for an artist called Trenton Green as well as Maddox Jones new album. Ongoing work includes mastering projects and recording sessions.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Both - my studio makes the best use of an analog front end to recording as well as a Dangerous Music 2 Bus plus for summing and mixing. Digital offers amazing benefit of time saving as well as things that cannot be done in analog like Melodyne and timing tweaks and more.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: I am extremely passionate about getting the most out of every piece of music I work on and will put my heart and soul into it. Every piece of music is different so it is not enough to just use a preset and say "that's it"

  9. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  10. A: I have been working with and in music and playing music since a very young age, using guitars, keyboards, drums, midi sequencers, tape machines and onto DAWs and more. Recently in 2022, I finally opened my own studio in Northampton.

  11. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  12. A: Be obsessive about audio

  13. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  14. A: An ongoing wish to continually improve.

  15. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  16. A: Attention to detail. When it comes to a song standing out, it is all the little parts and little production and mix moves that add up to make an amazing end product.

  17. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  18. A: The studio is contained in one room and includes many instruments from an old and well serviced upright piano which has an immense character to a Moog Little Phatty and Sequential Prophet 6. The monitoring includes top of the range JBL M2's with Crown amp and Dynaudio LYD48's alongside a mono Avantone mix cube to check translation onto smaller devices such as phones and laptops. Conversion is by the excellent Apogee Symphony mk2 and for mixes and masters, a Dangerous Music 2bus plus is used to add analog vibe, width and depth to audio, especially music that has been done completely in the box.

  19. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  20. A: The most common work I do is split between mastering and recording work for clients. The studio has a very good acoustic environment and can get excellent professional sounding vocals along with the upright piano and other instruments.

  21. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  22. A: I really enjoy working with multiple clients on different projects and bringing my knowledge and skillset to each artist.
