Héctor is one of the most talented mixing engineers I've worked with. We've worked 4 tracks in which he participated as a co-producer, mixing and recording engineer, that eventually became the most played songs in my Spotify profile (Pepe Zuma).

He ensure that every track he delivers to his clients meets high-level industry standards.

He is also a very nice person to work with because he knows how to control and enhance the emotional environment that is needed for any artists to perform optimally in the studio, getting the best results on any vocal or instrumental performance.

Interview with Héctor Jon

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I mixed and mastered a song called "Anatomia" by Callejo. It was my first mix and master done through a major label (Sony Music) and it got a great acceptance of the public.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Im working on a lot of mixes regularly and also focused on my YouTube Channel in which I use my work to teach people how to make better music in their home studios.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Graham Cochrane

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both. They are just different means to an end. We are now on a moment in which analog sounds great and digital sounds great, so Its just a matter of personal preference and the tools you like to use. Efficiency wise, digital is just years ahead.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I always like to under promise and over deliver. So I try my best to give a little bit more than what the client paid for.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: It's my passion and I love how a production can come alive and be as closed to the finished product as possible through mixing. I also love that as a mixer you can also get very creative and be a big part on the final result of a song.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: What is your payment method? - I work 50% in advance and 50% when I finish the project. Do I need to send your processed or unprocessed tracks - Commit to the sounds you like and send me what you think is best for the production. How many revisions? - 3 revisions at most, then I charge extra for follow ups.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That a bad production or recording can be fixed in the mix. That is just NOT true. Your mix is only as good as the quality of your production, arrangement and performance. If any of those are below par, then the mixer can do just as much.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What do you like and dislike about the rough mix? What are your musical influences? Are there any song references that I should take into account? What is your main vision of the song or project? What are your deadlines?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: I think communication is what really makes a work relationship function correctly. In the end mixing is a very subjective process and my work as an engineer is landing the artist's vision professionally through sound. If I understand the artist's vision and sonic direction, then it's my job to land that vision as close as possible.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Guitar, Computer, Interface, Headphones, MIDI Keyboard

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: My passion for music began when I was 11 years old and started playing the guitar. After I completed High School I knew I wanted to pursue music as my professional career. I applied to Berklee College of Music and got my Bachelors Degree in Music Production & Engineering. After I graduated I went back to Mexico and started working at one of the biggest media companies in the country: Televisa México. Then I wanted to become independent so I opened my own studio and have been mixing and mastering professionally ever since.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: More leaned into a modern polished sound.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: John Mayer. He has always been my biggest musical influence and I love how he combines musicianship with great songs and musicality.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Less is always more. If you can craft a great arrangement with the right instruments and elements of production, the mixing phase will become much more easy and better sounding. Focus on having a great recording and interpretation above all. The rest will come naturally.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I mostly work on pop, pop/rock, latin urban and singer-songwriter productions.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Understanding the client's vision, having great communication, patience and going above and beyond what they are expecting.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring a set of fresh ears, a new perspective on the production, musical taste and professional abilities that let me deliver a mix above expectations.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: My first step once we establish a work relationship is to have great communication with the artist. This lets me figure out their expectations and sonic direction in which they want to take their project or song. Next I study the demo mix so that I can get to know the arrangement, production elements and areas of opportunity. Once I get all this information, then I start mixing the song following the artist's guidelines and my own thought process.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I do most of my work completely in the box. From my experience and my workflow I know I can deliver great sounding mixes with the equipment I have available inside the computer. Also this workflow lets me deliver revisions in a faster manner.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: My biggest inspirations production wise are: Max Martin, Shellback, Benny Blanco, Charlie Puth, Ryan Tedder, among others. Mixing wise: Manny Marroquin, Michael Brauer, Dave Pensado, Chris Lord Alge, etc.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I mostly specialize in mixing and mastering fully produced songs.
