Interview with Quentin Rieux
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: In 2019, I did the mastering of a big band album. It was an unforgettable experience. It was a tribute to a deceased French composer. These original arrangements had never been played. It was broadcast a lot on social media because the music was great.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: A cover of Elton John - Can You Feel the Love Tonight for an album with a singer in Toulouse. 2 albums of current artists and I help my friend techno DJ, Space 92 (best seller Beatport in the world 2020) with these new tracks.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: No, but I recommend the other mix engineers on the site because I have observed a lot of professional people.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I mainly use the analog emulation plugin for now because it's more practical. When I could I would equip myself with more analog because it's deeper but many emulations aire good.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I finish my job when he is satisfied.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The artistic creation
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Can i ring as loud as... ? If the reference is similar, I say "I will do what I can". But if the reference has nothing to do with it, I tell the client that it won't sound the same, because the reference is not the most similar.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: it has no artistic choice in what we do.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Comment a été fait l'enregistrement ? Si les pistes peuvent être le plus bruts possible. S'il a un morceau de référence dans le même style.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: De régler les problèmes dès la prise de son et de ne pas attendre.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My headphone Focal Clear Pro because without good listening we can do nothing. Fabfilter for clean Waves plugin Melodyne SSL Channel Strip
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been a musician for over 15 years. I went to the music conservatory specializing in computer-assisted music 7 years ago. Since then I have been composing, mixing mastring for various projects. I had the chance to approach recording, mixing and mastering studios where I learned a lot. I have done several trainings like that of MJtutoriel which is a reference in France, David Guetta has also done it. I am also working at Sacem, copyright of musical works in France.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Modern and Clean.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would have liked to have worked with the Daft Punk because they are real robots who work in a surgical way to obtain perfection, that would be very instructive.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: You always have to wonder about adding an instrument or a plugin, what does it bring to the song? If the intake is nonexistent or even worse, do not be afraid to remove it.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I work on very different genre music like pop, trap, EDM, Jazz and more and more instrumental.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I work as a scientist but above all am a musician with a keen ear.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: After my intervention, the mix is clearer, more harmonious and the master warmer, punchy and brilliant.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: There are 3 distinct phases in the process. First, I make sure that the project I receive is finished from a musical point of view, if necessary I adjust (rhythm, pitch correction ...). Two elements, I mix on a logic Pro X file already set (instrument groups, Reverb bus, Delay, Parallel Compression ...). I check the staging gain and do the mixing. Each track receives a special treatment, with cleaning and coloring, compression, and if necessary clipping, limiting, saturating. I very often use the side-chain to connect the kick and bass but also on all the melodic instruments. Specialization often comes at the end. Three that I do the mastering on a separate file, again with presets that I fine-tune according to the style and the reference track. For example for a jazz or orchestral piece, I make sure not to overwhelm the dynamics. I refer to the following LUFS rules if it is for pressing or broadcasting on streaming platforms.

Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I love Kygo because he makes recognizable and modern sound. I like Docteur Dre because it's a great producer et business man. For me Dave Pensado was the best mix engineer of the world, his songs are amazing.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Before embellishing the stems with a specific routing chain for each type of instrument, I clean one by one the stems. I carefully make pitch corrections on vocals in order to have something musical and natural. I work a lot on kick and bass to get a balance on the other groups of instruments.
