Interview with iszy
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm currently writing songs and adding them to my song bank for sale or on hold for a future country album.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love being able to hear different projects and getting to be apart of a community that encourages diversity.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: What is your writing process like? I usually force myself to sit in my music room and talk to myself until I write the first two lines. Then I can just tell the story. I let my emotions take the wheel at that point.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What sound are you looking for? What emotions do you want to bring out or highlight?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: I would advise customers that I am extremely laid back and I absolutely love constructive criticism, so PLEASE give it when you can!
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: I would bring my ukuele (island vibes), my guitar (so I can finally find the time to learn it more extensively), my phone to write lyrics and record, and my capo!
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started out on YouTube as a singer/songwriter when I was 16. My fanbase then grew and I went through many changes throughout my life causing me to go on a hiatus until I was 19. I began writing again and decided that it was what I loved. I have geared my writing towards country music because it allows me to tell a story and speak to the listeners about my experience. It's really helped me open up my mind to new songwriting horizons.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I am a mixture of country, pop and urban. I love to mix sounds and genres when I get the chance.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Always play your song on repeat so you can hear every little detail you may have missed during production.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I have great communication skills and love to work on different projects.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Blue Yeti Mic and Garageband.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Toplining, harmonies, vocals, hooks, and songwriting.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Tori Kelly, Meaghan Trainor, Dan+Shay, Maren Morris, and Kelsea Ballerini.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Country and Pop.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I prefer talking over Skype or Facetime about your needs for your song. I would also write down details you want included in the song and send you over samples of the song for your personal revision.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring originality and honesty to my songs that I write. I infuse real emotion and stories together to create a song that can make an audience feel connected to it.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with Kelsea Ballerini or Maren Morris because their songs always inspire me. I would love to know their writing inspiration and process.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: People think that country music is all about tractors and corn fields. It's not. The beauty about country music is telling a story about something that feels pure and real to you. It's about being in a world without social media and all this craziness that the world provides.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise to make a song that you will love! If you don't love it, I'll give you your money back!
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I have had the privilege to work with many talented artists who I am proud to call my friends. I've had Bea Go on my first EP doing harmonies and backing vocals and we've written songs together. My best friend Amanda Yang and I are constantly writing and singing. We make the best duo. There are many more talented artists i've worked with but those two top the list!
