Interview with Kali Malia
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been performing live for 6 years, and writing/producing/recording music and vocals for 8 years. I grew up with music around me, as my father was a self-produced rapper. So as I got older and was able to get my hands on tools of my own, I ran with that. Creating/performing music has always been a therapeutic- almost spiritual- experience for me.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Ethereal R&B-Soul with Rap, Pop, Rock, and Classical/Theatre influences.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: EQ Cheat Sheets Everything should ideally be intentional (save for happy accidents that turn out to be cool). You want a balanced piece of audio work as well as an artistically expressive song. Look at charts called "EQ cheat sheets" to figure out which types of instruments would be best to pair together (and which "roles" you might need to fill to create a balanced sound) so they aren't competing for the same space on the spectrum. This will help avoid muddiness and achieve a clearer, more well rounded sound.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work on R&B-Soul and Pop. However, I love stepping out of that, as well as incorporating multiple genres within what I do in the umbrellas of R&B and Pop.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is singing. My vocal range is from B2-F6. Second to singing would be songwriting/toplining.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: On top of vocal ability, I bring strong emotion with a unique sound. Whatever genre or style/mood it is, you can feel the emotion I put into the vocals, even with pre-written lyrics. I feel things deeply and I use music to process those feelings, so I tap into them while recording. I think that's what makes the difference between a pretty song and a beautiful one.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My process depends on the song I'm working on and what it needs. If I'm writing,
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I primarily use a Telefunken TF51 mic with a Focusrite Scarlett interface. My software is Pro Tools; for production I primarily use Komplete 12 Ultimate. For vocals I'm using iZotope Vocal Nectar.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Vocally and lyrically, my inspirations/influences are Beyonce, Hayley Williams, Ariana Grande, Emilie Autumn, Erykah Badu, Sleeping with Sirens, Kehlani, Ashnikko, Pierce the Veil, Nicki Minaj, Doja Cat, Saweetie, Khalid, Drake, Eminem... In music production/composition, my inspirations/influences are Social House, Missy Elliot, Jason Robert Brown, Pharrell Williams, Derrej, and TBHits, Emilie Autumn, Murda Beatz, Danny Elfman, London on da Track...
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I'm approached with R&B and Pop vocal work most often. However, my influences come from multiple genres, so I love stepping outside of that and into other realms as well!
