Interview with MoreThanJp
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. I have analog gear which I use for recording vocals. However 98% of my workflow is digital and in the DAW.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: People in my field of work and not in my field of work often assume and settle on using 1 or 2 plugins to do ALL THE WORK.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I always ask for links of references or old music. Who or what inspires you or the song.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: The more you know what you want, the more accurate result you'll get.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been doing this for about 4 years now going on 5. I started off just trying to be an artist however, I instantly fell in love with engineering and production.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Joyful and Attentive.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Kanye West. I've been listening to more and more of his music (both old and new) and I really see why he's considered the genius that he is. It would possibly be the biggest learning experience I could have.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: GAIN-STAGE!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Dominantly hip-hop/rap. I have been lucky to work with rnb and pop singers but mostly on a recording basis. (I have mixed and mastered a few songs from other genres though.)
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Using creative methods to add depth to a song. Whether it's through modulation on a vocal, complex panning and movement, and even the playful use of a good reverb or delay.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Expertise and passion. I strive to be as good or even better then the best that do it today; there goes my passion. Along with the skills I developed over time through trial and error I will always be giving my best efforts not only to provide great work but to outdo myself. I like to always think that my next work is my best work.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I like to start of by listening to music I think has a great audio production or inspires me, then listen to any references and original work from the artist i'm about to work with. Typically I mostly do Mixing work so: I organize stems into my DAW, followed by any leveling and editing of tracks, then I get straight to mixing and doing whats necessary for the song.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Young Guru, Marc Daniel Nelson, and Mixed by Ali are just a few of many great talents that inspire me to be great and reach new heights.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I've been able to track and record a lot of music for artists locally. I also do in house mixing and remote mixes for artists of any variety.
