Michael K. Woods (MKW) is a GRAMMYs Recording Academy Member who specializes in all things voice, whether it be singing, songwriting, and/or crafting voiceovers with original copy. His charismatic and velvety tone can add richness to any project. MKW is a multi-instrumentalist and composer. He will bring your project to life with his sound.

Michael Kennedy Woods (MKW) is a producer, singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist who is passionate about delivering good music to his listeners' ears. Al-Lateef Farmer of SoulTrain notes, “heavily inspired by the events transpiring in the world surrounding him, he’s written songs to reflect the times...He’s acutely aware of the power the arts have in transmitting the messages of the people.”

Woods was born in Chicago, Illinois and raised in Sparta, Georgia. At a very young age, Woods started to use his ear to play the piano and sing intricate voice parts. He grew up in St. Mark AME church playing the piano and singing gospel songs that brought people to their feet. Woods wanted to find a way to blend Jazz, R&B, Pop, Electronic, Soul and New Age Soul.

MKW can provide fast turnaround as requested for your project as he is able to record himself in the comfort of his home using the best equipment and post-production techniques. He studied much of his production techniques independently with formal study at Vassar College. If you want him to lend his songwriting skills, he has written songs under time constraints. If you need a convincing, rich voice for narration, he can deliver and provide post-production editing.

MKW consistently delivers a high quality product for his clients and makes any project enjoyable. Contact him today for your next project.

Michael K. Woods (MKW) is a dear friend and I have had the honor of having his musical support on several musical productions I have launched in New York City. Michael has served as a musical director, composer, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist on several projects and his creative potential is unmatched. I have had the opportunity to be in a recording studio with him and watch him create music from the soul while offering creative contributions outside of the normal scope of singer/songwriter. Michael is a natural born leader, an incredible vocalist and a man of faith and positive energy.

Michael is an amazing artist and spirit. First he lights up every room that he walks in to. Second, he is a gifted musician and singer. I worked with him for a show I was putting together and he not only musically directed, but he sang back up and played keys. His ear is insane and he has a way of bringing out the best in everyone. He is definitely someone you want to work with!

Michael composed and curated a video piece for my poetic stage production. He masterfully handled all elements of production from recording my poem, to adding a score and editing together images/videos for our completed project. The piece acted as a catalyst for the rest of the show. I was really impressed by his professionalism. He showed up on time with all of the needed equipment to get the job done. It was my first time recording a poem and he made me feel comfortable and at ease. I'm a huge fan of his work and would highly recommend him for more.

Michael K. Woods provided the perfect musical backdrop for a short film project that we were working on. He is incredibly flexible, thoughtful, talented, and dialed in on projects not to mention an overall delight to work with. I look forward to collaborating with him on future projects!

Interview with Michael K. Woods (MKW)

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I worked on a composition for a dance short film memorializing the victims of 9/11. I was the composer for that film and was happy about the overall concept and composition. The team was truly great! Film Link: https://vimeo.com/461547317

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: I really do prefer analog when I have the opportunity to really work with it. Analog gives you so many ways to manipulate an instrument. No telling what may come from layering unique filters and delays from an analog instrument. There are so many unknown surprises waiting to be created via analog. Also, it just sounds better.

  5. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  6. A: Some questions might include: 1. What is the overall feel for the project? 2. Is there a deadline? 3. What is your budget? 4. Are you open to new suggestions? 5. What do you want for lunch when you meet with me?

  7. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  8. A: Communicate what you want clearly. Reference tracks are great as well to give me an idea of what you want. Also, having a budget in mind is nice as well.

  9. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  10. A: I would love to work with Janelle Monaé because she really creates a different sound on every project she releases. She is daring and bold! Experimentation is important in an industry that evolves so much.

  11. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  12. A: Keep learning and improving your equipment when you can. Reinvest in your craft to stay ahead.

  13. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  14. A: Esperanza Spalding is definitely one of my favorite musicians. She is so bold and a force to be reckoned with.

  15. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  16. A: The most common type of work is singing and composing. Usually I may comp vocals or provide edits on vocals for clients.
