Interview with Pedro Ferraz

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: One of the projects I am most proud to this day is the track "Rua" from brazilian group "ruadois". I participated as co-producer and mixing/mastering engineer and I believe I have brought the track to the sound it needed to have, from the punchy UK Garage grooves to the fast paced vocal deliveries and hard basslines.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I'm working on my solo project "adieu" and with some incredible brazilian independent artists!

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I'm new in the platform so I don't currently know other professionals here. But I will be in the lookout!

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: The one that fits your workflow best.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: That I will turn your idea to it's full potential

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Exploring new ideas and sonic landscapes.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: What's my time frame, wich is most of times 1 to 2 weeks for turing a idea to a professional realease ready sounding track.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That expensive analog gear means that your song will sound better. In the right hands it can do wonders but a lot of the biggest hits and cleanest tracks we hear right now were made 100% in the box.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I always start with the artists intention, be it in the sound or more broad goals, reference tracks and a time estimate for the project.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: To be authentic, don't try to be someone else, try to do something new.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: To be honest I don't focus on gear all that much, I'd like to have a good computer, a keyboard and mouse hahaha. A pair of M50x to listen to my tracks and a good audio interface and that's it. I'm a simple guy.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: My first contact with music was through the guitar, when I had 9 years old. When I had 14 I installed FL Studio on a old laptop my mom had and start messing with it. About when I 16 years old I started working with Ghost Production platforms such as EDM Ghost Producer and House of Tracks, It was by that time that I also started working with lots of independent artists here from Brazil. Now I'm 20 years old and music production/mixing and mastering is my main job, I am always looking for new oportunities and projects to work with.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Versatile.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I'd love to have a studio session with Thom Yorke from Radiohead, I view him as one of the most brilliant and innovative producers and performers of the century, from his works with Radiohead to his solo project.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Focus on the song, don't let your ego get in the way of the story you're trying to tell.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I work with all types of music, from uplifting dance tracks, to dark and heavy, to mellow and sad songs. I'm always open to new sounds and ideas!

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: People always point out how I work with texture and space to bring all kinds of feelings to my productions. I love to make things sound exactly as I want them to sound in the context of the song, so it ends up fitting the right space .

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: One of my main goals is to make a song live up to it's full potential, if it needs to be delicate and minimal, or harsh and heavy, I will focus on accenting these characterists to the right amount, to guide the listener through the story the music is telling, be it through the production, sound pallete or even mixing and mastering choices.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: My process when working with artists always starts with reference tracks, so I can get the artist's intention as clearly as possible. From there it's always different from track to track, my philosphy is to let the music speak for itself and minimize ego, both from myself and the artist sometimes, my job is to bring a song to it's greatest potential.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I am currently working from my bedroom, my workflow is 100% in the box with Ableton Live 11. My monitoring setup includes a pair of Yamaha HS5 studio monitors and Audio Technica ATH-M50x headphones. For recordings I have two mics, an Audio Technica AT-2020 condenser mic and a Shure SM57 going through a cloudlifter pre-amp, mainly to record acoustic guitar parts. I also have a Fender Squier Stratocaster and an Arturia Keylab 61 Essential.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: My main inspirations come from producers who cultivate a unique sound, such as Flume, Skrillex, Four Tet and many more from the Electronic/Dance scene. I also listen a lot of Bon Iver, Frank Ocean and more delicate sounding artists, focusing on the beautiful vocal and instrumental textures.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I am currently working with custom production for independent artists, from pop tracks to experimental beats. More recently I also started working with mixing, mastering, sound design and custom soundtracks for commercial use.
