Interview with TIEM
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: The e.p which I am currently working on has been a rather tumultuous, yet satisfying project as ive been collaborating with people i normally wouldn't collaborate with. Its been an eye opener and a stretcher for me. i am very excited as i leap into the unknown and let the music write itself, it is confusing yet rewarding.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am working on singles leading up to my e.p which i do not yet have a release date for. I am also writing other styles of music in order to broaden my horizon and my skills. I am always looking for the new and best next thing.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: No
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Either or, it simply depends on the type of project i am working on. At times i want to be more hands on, other times digital just does the job!
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise to deliver beyond your expectations and leave you satisfied. What ever your goal is, i am ready to provide a top quality service/product for your project.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The freedom to be unapologetically myself.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Customers usually ask me to lower prices or ask for more than what is initially agreed. My answer would be if i were to lower my prices then i would lower my quality. This never actually goes this way because i would never do such a thing. My quality is my pride so rather than lowering that I would rather a customer approached another vendor which is more suitable to what they need.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That I only write music about my personal experiences. While that might be partially true, i also write music from the perspectives and experiences of other people. I also like to songs from the perspective of a story whether fictional or non fictional. for me film and music are one in the same thing.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What is the best part of their job and why?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: I'd say to pay attention to the detail of the music and pay attention to the nuances of their style, timing & choice of words. Also i'd say look for somebody personable who is ope to building a relationship rather than a transaction. That would tell you alot about their character and musical capabilities.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: I would take a guitar, keyboard, saxophone, xylophone, cabasa
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: M career path has always been music even though I am a politcs graduate. I have found a new passion in teaching music and thats what has kept me in this lane as i am always looking for ways to advance my career.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is smooth, yet punchy, it is mature yet playful, it is also shaped by my world perspective and how i relate to people, places and situations, thus meaning it can change and take different forms but still sounds like myself.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with drake because i see alot of my self in him and i like his stylistic approach to music. He always seems to think outside of the box which makes me think we would work well together as someody who also likes to think outside of the box and catch them by surprise.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: listen to more music!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I grew up on Motown, MJ, Boyz 2 men, Wu-tang, Mary J, Brandy, South african gospel/soul including the tribal sounds of the southern african region so id say these sounds really shaped me as an artist and all contribute to the artist I am today. From this i've developed a liking and ability to tap mainly into R&B, Hiphop, Trap, afrobeats as well as other sounds which i love to dabble into which are Pop, soul, jazz, gospel, rock to name a few.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Writing and vocal production are probably my strongest skills.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Without being cliché, i'd say i bring all of me to a song! Most times people (including my self) don't show up 100% to the things that pertain to their life, so for me music is one of those areas where i show up 110% openly, truthfully, unashamedly and with that comes new ideas and a fresh perspectives. The more simple and direct answer would be the 'top line' ;)
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I typically start with selecting an instrument which mirrors my feeling at the present time. once thats chosen i then start with melodies first to capture the vibe and then later piece together the song with words of either my personal experiences or the experiences of others, stories both fictional and non fictional.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have an M-Audio vocal processor, macbook pro, KRK studio monitors and a Roland microphone. Software wise i use antares and waves for mu effects.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: The motown Era of artists is what really birthed my love for music and shaped my style and sound. As music has evolved over the years, I am inspired by any and everything regardless of the genre. I believe there is magic in all pieces of art.
