Anshul Karn

Session Guitarist

Anshul Karn on SoundBetter

I'm an acoustic guitar player and have been playing for the past 21 years now. My song Eternity (acoustic instrumental) reached 400,000 streams in 2 months with 96,000 active monthly listeners. My work has been featured in the following editorial playlists on Spotify- Calming acoustic, Cozy acoustic morning, Sweater weather instrumentals.

As an avid music enthusiast and a gear nerd, I have spent years practicing and mastering techniques that bring out the best from an acoustic guitar. Fingerstyle is my main area of expertise and I am comfortable with composing music. When it comes to composing, my methodology is that once I understand the requirement of my client, I typically take a few days just to understand what can be done with the track. Unlike pay per hour sessions which run under severely stressed timelines, I wish my work creates a lasting impression to whoever listens to it, so I might take a week or two to get back to my client with the first draft. I believe in delivering quality written content and so I will ensure that I spend enough time with the track before I'm fully satisfied with the standards I have set for myself.

Interview with Anshul Karn

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: Whatever helps me get the right sound. When I talk about guitar effects, digital has come a long way. There was a time when digital could replicate maybe 80% of the analog sound but none of the feel. Today, were 95% there in both sound and feel. Plus digital = Affordability = better availability and adoption across players of different economic backgrounds

  3. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  4. A: Martin OM 42, Martin vintage 5-18, Martin D 45, Martin 17 series Vintage, Pepe Romero Replica Ukulele

  5. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  6. A: A different perspective, having learnt backwards with instrument first and theory later, I'm wired towards exploring by default rather than working within a set construct. I bring a fresh and unique perspective, my sound samples will demonstrate the same.

  7. Q: What's your typical work process?

  8. A: I take my time to ensure the best work is put out there, if required to compose I'm comfortable spending anywhere between a week to a month to get the perfect notes out there.

  9. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  10. A: My main guitar is an all mahogany Martin Dreadnaught. The wood makes up for its pristine clear notes, overtones and exceptional clarity. I also use a Martin dreadnaught - Sitka spruce topped guitar for clients looking for a heavy Low end sound. I mic all my guitars through an SM 57 running into a Scarlett 2i2 audio interface. I monitor my tracks through Yamaha HS8 studio monitors and Sennheiser HD650 Headphones.

  11. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  12. A: John Mayer, Andy McKee, Mateus Asato and Tommy Emmanuel

  13. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  14. A: Acoustic guitar tracks, particularly fingerstyle related work.
