Interview with Steven Lopez
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Im really proud of this last song I made, I wrote, recorded, produced, and mixed it myself but I had some local artists hop on and it was a really fun working with them. I love meeting and working with new artists and I think we hit this one out the park.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Currently I am editing a song, then I'm off to create a few instrumentals.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: both really haha, there is no doubt that analog adds some great color and harmonics to instruments/vocals but digital emulations are getting better and better.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I won't be done until I provide you with something you are proud of.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love helping other people create their vision, bringing it to life.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: there's 2 that really come to mind, 1. is that a great mix can save a bad song, wrong, remember, practice makes perfect and the better the recording, the better the mix and master will be. 2. That you need all these fancy effects to make your song sound great, or you need lots of reverb to make it sound big, which is not true and too often I see inexperienced artists trying to mix their own track and adding way to much, often times losing the vocals in the mix.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What their vision is, who inspires them or who/what they were thinking of when making the song.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Let me know what your needs are and how I can help you, give me your vision and if you are not sure, drop a message and lets figure it out together.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Computer, Midi Pad, My interface, my ML-1 Mic, and Slate Digital plugins is all I need
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Audio Engineer and Music artist. I've been writing music for probably about 10 years, started mixing about 3 years ago and i plan on crushing it!
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Hmmm, energetic I'd say, maybe a little different, lets say.....interesting.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Probably J Cole, Token, Eminem, I love their music and I think it would be awesome to work with them.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Create a vision and keep that vision, to often we get side tracked by whatever sounds good in the moment and that's not always what sounds best for the track as a whole.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Usually I work on rap music, but I am an all around engineer.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Audio Mixing is my strongest skill, I love bringing a song to life with my skills. But don't count my production skills out, because they are a close second.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I'd like to say I bring excitement and clarity to a song.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Whether its Mixing a song or making a beat I like to first have a vision in mind, what's the feel of the song and how do I show that. Then I break it down by steps and how I achieve to achieve those goals. I like to keep things exciting for the listener so that before they even know it, their groovin to the music.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a fully treated room, Logic Pro, Personus Sceptre speakers, Komplete Audio 6 Interface and as for plug-ins I really love using Slate Digital because they add so much color to a track, but I also use Waves Plug-ins, Izotope, Kilo-Hearts, and Kyles Drip Plug-in in as well.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I love music and have so many inspirations like, Tupac, Kayne West, J Cole, Drake and so much more.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Audio mixing and audio production.
