Interview with Ryan Avinger
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Fairly modest home rig with a couple of outboard channel strips. Mostly work inside the box with an arsenal of plugins. The facility I work at has all the cool analog toys that I have access to.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Josh Daigrepont, he's been one of the most influential engineers of my career. Without him I don't think I'd be able to work in this field for a living. Incredibly talented, extremely versatile, and just a great person in general.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started as an unpaid intern at Dauphin Street Sound knowing absolutely nothing about the process but was able to learn from some of the best and brightest engineers. From there I was brought on as an assistant engineer then from there I became a house engineer for the studio.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Dreamy, I'm notorious for adding lots of delays and reverbs (tastefully though).
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Don't overthink it. It's temping to add loads of instruments, effects, crazy stuff. Sometimes the most impactful songs are subtle. Also take breaks and listen with fresh ears!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: At the moment predominantly hip-hop and rap. Also a lot of indie pop.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Kevin Parker of Tame Impala is a huge influence on what my sound is, same with Ernest Greene of Washed Out. I've been incredibly fortunate to have worked under some truly talented engineers such as Trina Shoemaker and am constantly inspired by their work.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I mainly track clients and mix projects but I also master and produce as well.
