Pablo is the best bass player I've ever worked with! His turn around is the fastest and has a producers ear. He is also a great keyboardist.

I already use Pablo for bass on my recordings and he is an awesome bassist, but this is the 2nd time I've asked him to record keyboards for a song. Not only can he play great keyboard parts but he has a producers ear, so he also knows exactly where to play and where not to.

Interview with Pablo Elorza
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio is composed of a control room and a sound booth for recordings in which I usually record from small drums set up to vocals, guitars, amps, among others. Some of my gear are: INTERFACES: RME Babyface Pro, Behringer Ultagain Digital, NI Maschine, NI Komplete 12 Ultimate. PREAMPS: UAD Solo 610, Avalon U5, Elysia Skulpter (pair), Hairball Elements Gold, Aguilar Tone Hammer 500, Singletone. MICS: U87, RE20, SOV (pair), Senheiser 838. INTRUMENTS: Fender Jazz Bass American Deluxe V, Fender Jazz Bass American 60´Fretless, Ibanez FN200 Hollow Bass, SoAme Custom V bass, Tribe Telecaster, Cort Acoustic, Korg Keys, among others.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Yes, Bobby Medina, Federico Palmolella, Rodrigo Malvido, Pechiche Mena, Julian Piterman and Christen Placa.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: All I do, every project in witch I get involved is special for me just for the reason of having the chance to work with so many talented artist around the world. I couldn’t be more happy and proud of every project I’ve done.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: At the date (Oct 20, 2020) I’m working in Christen Placa first album, my fifth soloist album also and a film scoring for Bobby Medina.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. The best way to modeling sound is through a pallet of options and both, analog and digital gear are that for me. Every production I work has different needs and approaches, so its great to have the chance of picking the best option for every moment.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: A high quality job done as fast as possible by a professional with more than 25+ years in the business.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: That isn’t a job at all, besides doing this as a professional since so many years its more like something I love to do.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Q: What do I need to send you for starting? A: Just a mp3 with your song (if recording instrument); or a rough demo in mp3 of your song and lyrics (if producing). Q: How fast can you deliver the track? A: If recording Bass for example, I can deliver my takes waiting 24-48hs. If producing, everything depends of the complexity of the arrangement preferred and if I´ll mix and mastering the track or not. If only producing with no mix, I can say probably between 3-5 days.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Very often people think that this is an easy job like just playing for a couple of hours sometimes and get inspiration to write a song or whatever. Another one, people usually doesn’t want to recognize and pay for what you do and collaboration shouldn’t be a synonymous of working for free.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: When recording instrument: what kind of sound would you like to have?; based on my gear, there’s any preferences you want me to use? When producing a song: What genre would you like to have in your song?; Is there any artist or album that I can use as reference?; Do you prefer any kind of instrumentation in particular?; Do you have access to a recording studio o home studio to add your vocal/ instrument?. Among a few others that let me see the full panorama.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Do an extensive research before hire someone. Trying to find the adequate working partner takes time and don’t let big names or famous people blur your decision. Use your instinct and ears, most of all, to choose the right person for your project. Also, take the time to contact the person and chat to figured out if everything could work or not.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Universal Audio Solo 610 Preamp, RME Babyface Pro, Baumann Soviet Mic (Custom), Fender Jazz Bass & Native Instrument Komplete 12.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been in the music business for more than 25+ years and during this period of time I've had so many different experiences with styles, genres and instruments, both live as a session player on tours and as a band leader, as equal as recording, arranging and producing music for other artist and my own. I have experience playing/ recording Rock, Pop, Funk, Jazz, Latin, Salsa, Afro, Folclore, Tango, R&B, Soul, among others. For further information please visit my website: https://pabloelorza.com/about/
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Versatile. With no limits regarding styles and genres. Music and Art is one.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: All Artist are welcome. Every single person has something different and unique to offer.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Everything you do, try to do it great from the very beginning. No matter how fast and accurate you are editing and using your DAW tools, when recording nothing is better than a full take played well and with the right mood and energy.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I have plenty experience working in Rock, Pop, Indi-Pop Funk, R&B, Jazz, Latin and World Music but I did and still do other different types of genres like Hip Hop, Folclore, Classic among others.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I consider myself a good listener both in musical and human aspects. In the music field being a good listener helps you find quickly what your production needs in terms of arrange, instrumentation and so on. In the human field being a good listener helps you to better communicate with your client and help them canalize their ideas in order to put and organize the information to work with.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Every musician/ producer brings their own personality to a song when recording, that’s almost impossible not to do. But for sure. I like to bring fresh ideas, sounds, music embellishment and my expertise to make the producing process as fun and creative possible.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: When producing a song I typically listen the rough demo several time and try to imagine while doing it what kind of arrangement may fit with a the possible instrumentation, whether is acoustic or digital (samplers). Then I ask my client to have a conversation about what She/He is expecting or/ and listening for this particular track. I usually ask for reference artist tracks cause this is a great starting point to put a north at the music. When everything is clear I start working in the general idea of the arrangement and share it with the client to have the approvement in order to keep working. When recording Bass or another instrument I almost do the same kind of procedure, asking the client for artist references, kind of sound the would like to have. Once this seted I try different gear and instrument combination to achieve the sound. I like to deliver at least 2-3 takes with different things going on to give my clients the chance to pick what suits better in the mix. I usually repeat the previous step with almost all work I do in order to avoid misunderstand and please my clients in the best way possible.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: The list is so big that is almost impossible to reduce it to a few but just to name a couple: Pino Palladino, Nathan East, Guillermo Vadalá, Richard Bona, Abraham Laboriel, Thundercat, Quincy Jones, Jacob Collier, Becca Stevens, Igor Stravinsky, Maria Schneider, Gil Goldstein, Raul Midon, Andy Wallace, Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell, Alan Silvestri, Bernard Herman, Frank Fillipeti, Luis Alberto Spinetta, D´Angelo, among so many other…
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Usually I do several different type of work in which I feel comfortable with.
