Interview with Steven Thad
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I'm a huge fan of Beyoncé and her work ethic. She's not only great a lead vocals, but she's is a master at BGVs (most people don't pay attention to those). Pharrell Williams is another amazing musician who also has the ability to bring the best out of just about every artist that he works with. Not to mention his beats are one of a kind (Nice - The Carters, Frontin' - Jay Z, Lemon - N.E.R.D., and the list goes on and on). Jazmine Sullivan is an incredible singer who reminds me of the music I grew up listening to as a kid (mainly Gospel music). Standing out in a musical environment where just about everyone can sing (and sing well might I add) is not an easy thing to do, and Jazmine's voice reminds me of what "stand-out" singing sounded like back when I was younger (i.e. Kim Burrell, Angie White, etc.)
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I usually sing melodies, verses, and hooks for different artists. I also provide lyrics here and there if I'm moved to do so. But most importantly, BGVs are my bread and butter. They really bring a track to life.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: When I first started, I didn't use any instrumentation...just my voice. I grew up singing a Capella music with my two sisters. Recently, I've started working with Reason 11 to make beats. After beat-making, I'll typically transition to Logic Pro X where I record vocals overtop of the instrumental stems. After this is mixing, and then finally mastering (all on my own for right now).
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I currently work right from home using Logic Pro X and a studio microphone! I've also got a MIDI keyboard that I use to make beats on!
