Sam is a talented and tasteful musician and audio engineer. His mixes hold depth and bring out the best parts of a recording. Having worked with him on countless projects, I can vouch for his sensibilities across several genres and styles. His uses his studio and his gear with precision and purpose, not relying on the equipment to guide him, but using his ear and sense to dictate what gear is used and why. You won't be disappointed. His communication and reception to feedback is personable and humble. A genuine man and fantastic craftsman of sound.

We were referred to Sterk by another great engineer who didn't have time to commit to our project, and we were thoroughly pleased with the mixing experience that he provided. He was very prompt in the delivery of each iteration of our mixes, and even let us come into his studio to attend the first session. The guy knows his stuff!

Interview with Sam Sterk

  1. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  2. A: I record and mix out of my room in Vista, CA. It's a cool space with a vintage nautical theme. It's not large, but it's a fun hang. It's great for overdubs and mixing.

  3. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  4. A: Indie Rock

  5. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  6. A: Mixing

  7. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  8. A: My clients tell me that I bring a dynamic, distinctive, and capturing mix. In my productions, I love to experiment.

  9. Q: What's your typical work process?

  10. A: For mixing, people typically send me their consolidated WAV files and I import them into Logic. I find that it's great to have a rough mix of the song, so that I know what direction they're going for. Once I have a mix at a point I'm happy with, I'll send it back to the artist and wait for any feedback that they might have. I'll take that feedback and make revisions to it. Once the artist is happy, I'll send them a final mix that's ready for mastering.

  11. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  12. A: I'm a big fan of rock music, but I've been told that I have pretty eclectic tastes. My favorite engineers include: Michael Brauer, Nicholas Vernhes, Andy Wallace, Aaron Sprinkle, Matt Goldman, Rich Costey, John Congleton, and Tom Elmhirst.

  13. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  14. A: I prefer to do mix work for my clients, but I also record, edit, and master as well.
