Interview with Taylor Mesple

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I co-produced and mixed a great album for an Irish artist a few years back - we met over the internet and never met in person until many years after the album was released. The power of a long distance collaboration fully realized!

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: My new album "Cerulean", overdubs for several awesome songwriters and a short film.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Both have their advantages!

  7. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  8. A: Keyboard players are often skilled with production and engineering - but the reverse isn't necessarily true.

  9. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  10. A: What music do you love? What do you hate? Why?

  11. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  12. A: Ask for samples of their work and make sure it MOVES you!

  13. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  14. A: Power generator with unlimited fuel, laptop, headphones, microphone and compressor! :-)

  15. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  16. A: Started at the age of 13, child prodigy touring the contemporary jazz festival circuit. 25+ years later, still cranking out the discography additions!

  17. Q: How would you describe your style?

  18. A: Beautiful textures and three-dimensional landscapes

  19. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  20. A: Imogen Heap - one of the most brilliantly unique and original artists on the planet - full of mystery and depth.

  21. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  22. A: Allow certain things to be raw and imperfect - when the magic is there.

  23. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  24. A: A singer-songwriter's best friend. I specialize in folk, pop/rock, contemporary jazz, blues/roots and Americana. Also funk, soul and world music is right up my alley.

  25. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  26. A: Caring about the soul of the song and digging deep into my soul to connect with it. I often bring tears to the eyes of the artist when they hear what I added or created to help tell the story.

  27. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  28. A: Alchemy/magic. I am extremely sensitive to the vocal/melody and the other instruments/voicings in a song, so I play things that complement and elevate the other tracks. My keyboard playing is extremely refined and beautiful, with a lifetime of depth and vocabulary to inform it.

  29. Q: What's your typical work process?

  30. A: I like to separate the technical side from the alchemy side. I will set up the logistics/files for a session one day and track music in the session the next day.

  31. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  32. A: Pro Tools with custom modded interfaces, custom built Neve 33609 buss compressor, Hammond Organ, boutique mics and preamps, hot rodded analog console, DynAudio speakers, Hafler amps, vintage guitars and amps.

  33. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  34. A: Yellowjackets, Peter Gabriel, John Mayer, Sting, Abe Laboriel Jr., Kevin Gilbert, Pat Leonard, Pat Metheny...

  35. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  36. A: I add magic and depth to tracks that I connect with emotionally. I am a world-class keyboard player with the ability to bring real excitement to a track. And as a mixing engineer I bring out the best in the potential of a song - punch, power, beauty.
