When I mix and master a track I always start for the kick If is an electronic dance track and then I start equalizing and compriming tracks until I get the best mix for the song. After that is the time to find the right place for every instrument and then mastering with basically is just compriming and limiting with a few more adjusts. With the client I like persons with everything clear for their tracks so It helps a lot in order to reach a satisfiying result for both but there's no problem If they let me be creative. ;)
