Interview with NicoLeBlanc
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That it is easy and anyone can do it . Anyone can do it but it’s not easy at all. Also engineers are still fighting for publishing royalties.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What’s your inspiration ? How long have you been recording? What is your Budget ? What is your expected turnaround time ?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Be as clear about your vision as possible so we can understand what we’re doing. Also trust the process and use your revision
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: A zoomh6 with a solar powered battery A Ukulele Fire starter A machete And a pot
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been making music for 8 years and engineering for 7 I’ve been from top to bottom but , I started in school for media , dropped out began an internship in Seattle Washington at Pyramid Studios. From there I’ve honed my craft. I recently moved to Atlanta and broadened my skill set 100% independent
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Eclectic and inspiring
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Kid Cudi , he is the a goat in my eyes he’s inspired me a lot and shaped how I approach things even outside of music.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Youtube
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: R&B , and Hip hop / Trap
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Writing
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Over the top performance necessity. I push artists to have the best recordings as possible so we can have a great mix and even better master . I make the process easy so that your confident in your next song or project or this project . When you can just sit back, relax and create YOUR art YOUR way and I bring it to industry standard that’s what I bring to a song the industry itself.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Listen to reference or beat . Open pro tools + find tempo + find key. Load the beat into the session if we are doing a recording session or I load the stems into the session if we are doing mixing. This is where I can be as transparent about pricing with mixing as I can be. Once the stems are all loaded into the pro tools session I organize the tracks by category (Hook, Verse one and two, Dubs/backing tracks and adlibs) once the tracks are organized by category I can now begin mixing (and this order goes for recording as well) I start with whatever the song begins with usually the hook I first clean up the vocals and bring out more clarity , then I move to dynamics , i use compressors , limiters and gates all together to get you industry quality levels and clarity . Depending on your genre/Vocal tone I will use certain amounts of reverb , delay no mix is the same and I have had a lot of different sounds on my plate.
