Interview with Paul Steward
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That Blues artists aren't capable of producing pop.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What's the song or sound that makes you smile?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: I'm open and flexible, talk to me and I'll help you to try and make what it is that you want.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: my Gibson Les Paul Custom special with all 4 push/pull pots on the tone nobs for single-coil/full-coil and phase-in/phase-out tone effect.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started performing when I was 14 and never stopped. I've been studios numerous times but my most recent album was the first time I produced the whole project at home.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Powerful, sweet, high, melodic, old school.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: B.B. King...because he's the king! But since he's not here anymore, I'd like to work with Robert Randolph. When he crafts artistic pedal-steel guitar lines it's amazing.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: More bass, kick drum, more reverb. Clean tones.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Blues, R&B, Soul, Rock & Roll.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Improvising, adding guitar lines, soul style singing.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Energy, passion, love. 4 years of college music study; 22 years of music listening and studying especially in Blues; a lifetime of living the Blues.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: The album "Reckless" by Luther Allison in my opinion is a beautiful work of art.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I record guitar parts or vocal parts for those that like my bluesy sound.
