Interview with Paul Steward

  1. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  2. A: That Blues artists aren't capable of producing pop.

  3. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  4. A: What's the song or sound that makes you smile?

  5. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  6. A: I'm open and flexible, talk to me and I'll help you to try and make what it is that you want.

  7. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  8. A: my Gibson Les Paul Custom special with all 4 push/pull pots on the tone nobs for single-coil/full-coil and phase-in/phase-out tone effect.

  9. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  10. A: I started performing when I was 14 and never stopped. I've been studios numerous times but my most recent album was the first time I produced the whole project at home.

  11. Q: How would you describe your style?

  12. A: Powerful, sweet, high, melodic, old school.

  13. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  14. A: B.B. King...because he's the king! But since he's not here anymore, I'd like to work with Robert Randolph. When he crafts artistic pedal-steel guitar lines it's amazing.

  15. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  16. A: More bass, kick drum, more reverb. Clean tones.

  17. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  18. A: Blues, R&B, Soul, Rock & Roll.

  19. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  20. A: Improvising, adding guitar lines, soul style singing.

  21. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  22. A: Energy, passion, love. 4 years of college music study; 22 years of music listening and studying especially in Blues; a lifetime of living the Blues.

  23. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  24. A: The album "Reckless" by Luther Allison in my opinion is a beautiful work of art.

  25. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  26. A: I record guitar parts or vocal parts for those that like my bluesy sound.
