Fede was so kind & accommodating. He also suggested I use a live drummer & wow, what a difference it made! He's easy to work with, communicates clearly & knows his stuff.
    I highly recommend him.

Interview with Federico Hencker

  1. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  2. A: I´ve been working in the audio field for more than10 years now. I started in Colombia studying audio engineering in college, then I went to USA to certified myself as an AVID certified professional in music and post. After studying there and completed my audio engineer degree I spent some time in Miami working for latin producer Luigi Giraldo (Mr.Melodyo), afterwards I came to Costa Rica and built my personal project Green Road Recording Studio.

  3. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  4. A: I got involved in a project from a Costarrican artist called Mar Villarreal. I was the recording & mixing engineer of the whole album. The album´s name is Made in Costa Rica. It´s important to me since I´m from Colombia and I convinced the artist to record the album in my country with local musicians. Musicians that I admire and I met when I was in college, so, that´s why the project is really special for me. We spent some time in Colombia doing it and I put a lot of heart on it.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Andres Mayo, Stefano Pizzaia

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both. I believe that having the possibility of working between these two worlds can expand the color palette. For instance I love to work with plugins, I believe plugins eases my job from heaven to earth. I can´t live without them, however I also believe in analog summing, so, I´m a big fan of hybrid mixing.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I will deliver the job until I´m totally sure I´m enjoying it!

  11. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  12. A: At the end, the biggest misconception is to perceive my work merely technical. I put a lot of creativity in the work I perform, specially while mixing. Creativity should be always valued.

  13. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  14. A: I believe I would like to work with TOOL or A Perfect Circle, that's my dream since high school.

  15. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  16. A: I like to use magazine paper to reduce high frequency information when recording hi hats.A very good friend and Colombian producer taught me this. I been doing this since a few years now and I just love the way it controls the high frequencies.

  17. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  18. A: Because of my location I´m used to work on different genres. Hip Hop, Reggae, Reggaeton, Pop, Rock, Indie, etc.

  19. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  20. A: I never send a song until I´m totally sure I did a good job on it. I really like to focus on details and add a little bit of personal taste on each project.

  21. Q: What's your typical work process?

  22. A: First hand I like to know in detail what the client is looking for. Listen the material and let them know if I´m the right person to do the job. After that , I like to give the client a little feedback about the project, and if the client is asking, also give them some recommendations before starting the project. I don´t like to start working on something that is just not ready.

  23. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  24. A: At the heart of the studio a Solid State Logic Matrix integrated with a bunch of outboard gear. From API,Millennia, SSL, Avalon and more. My digital setup in the other hand, Pro Tools Ultimate Native plugged to 2x Lynx Auroras and a beautiful pair of Dynaudio BM15 for monitoring.

  25. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  26. A: I have a great music test

  27. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  28. A: The ability of meeting people from all over the world. That´s what excites me most.

  29. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  30. A: I always ask the client to be sure the material is ready for the job I´m going to perform.

  31. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  32. A: Mostly recording & mixing services and in between: editing, vocal tuning , drums quantize & ADR

  33. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  34. A: Andrew Scheps - Sylvia Massy - Andy Wallace
