Interview with Andy Timko
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I was hired by Michael Klein to write songs on SoundBetter and we ended up recording hem in studio together in Los Angeles. The result was amazing and we've had a great collaborative relationship, and almost 100k streams on Spotify on one of the songs.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Currently, I am working on a few of my own songs, as well as a top line and demo production track for a SoundBetter client.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I would recommend K808.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I'm not a purist, and I believe that either can be great. I think that digital works great in 99.9% of applications, especially with the ways in which music is concerned in 2023.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise is that I will work until they are satisfied with the end result. I want their vision to come to fruition.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love the ability to be creative and collaborate with people to create songs that move people.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Customers most commonly ask for my unique take on songs, and to not be overly concerned with a reference track. I generally respond positively, and do my best to make their song as great as I can.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The biggest misconception is that I work in a large professional studio, however I have a small mobile setup, that I get a big professional sound from!
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Generally I ask them what vibe they are going for, or if they can give me any reference tracks to better understand their vision for their song.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: I would say be sure that you are clear in what you are asking your provider for, and once your provider has provided the service and delivered, promptly mark the job complete :)
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: a solar panel or something to produce power, a guitar, microphone, interface, MacBook, and cables. That's 6, but cables don't count :)
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been doing this for over 10 years. My career path has long focused on gigging and performing in clubs around the country. Since the pandemic I have focused on production.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Commercial country, meets singer songwriter.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with Ernest because he's an incredible songwriter and I'd to make more great songs.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Simple is best! Let the song tell its story and get out of the way.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Country
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Singing and Songwriting
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Vocally, I bring a male country voice with a lot of uniqueness and character. I can also add acoustic guitar, basic lead parts, additional instrumentation in the style of country and Americana, and I can bring an approach to songwriting that makes the song flow better lyrically, and melodically.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: It depends on the task, however generally I start with an acoustic guitar and a click track, and build the song around there. If I am writing, I prefer to write with just an acoustic guitar and build the song once written, but I also occasionally write to tracks.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I do all of my production work on my MacBook in order to speed up my workflow. I have a simple setup at home with condenser microphones, and a Shure SM7B, run through an Apollo interface. I work in a sound treated room and do all of my work in Logic Pro with a mix of stock and boutique plugins.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I am inspired by amazing songwriters. I love simple and clean productions that accurately convey a songs meaning, as a result I generally gravitate towards Nashville-style producers and songwriters.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: The most common work I do for clients is demo singing, light production work, and songwriting.
