Interview with Toni From Here Comes The Sound
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I produced a band called Dagmara - Pop/Rock band and i think all of us we grow up, we could catch a special moment, was really happy when they got the cd, etc... Also i was working in Japan in some movie projects i could learn a lot, specially the production for Van Cliburn with Larry McConkey and Christopher Wilkinson, they are big Hollywood legends, was just cool how they love this art.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Actually in many projects, i started with a Heavy-Folk-Rock band called MITAGO, also i'm finishind a short movie called "hasta cansarnos", and producing new singles for a J-Rock band called [Mizu] from Barcelona.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I just arrived i don't know nobody :(
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: both because nowadays 100% analog is really expensive, but i believe mix both, good gear, good plugins and the most important, mixing sense, just find a way or concept.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: We finish the production until you do your best take
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: When they listen what they recorded and they feel something, they know they did and sometimes many emotiions appear.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: -Are you doing beats? - Yes, i can do -If i bring my tracks can you mix?? - Yes no problem -If we record the guitar in the rehearsal studio (for safe money) is ok?? - its ok but its not a price meaning, if the band can play together i prefer do it at the same time. -Can we smoke in the studio - NOOOooooo -Can we finish the album in 3 days? - It depends on you guys!! at the end the process is the most important, we can finish in 10 minutes or 10 days, but in 10 minutes is quite difficult to put soul in the tracks
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: A sound engineer that just put mics in the amps or try to get or copy X sounds. I prefer to discover the personality of each artist.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What concept did you were working in the songs? is there any relationship with your experience in the songs? What you expect recording this work? what you expect from me? etc...
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: To me is very important have a chat, i just want to know the artist better to understand what kind of production they want, no matter professional or amateur, professionality is just an attitude.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: mic U67 Pro tools Hd system with computer My custom Emi preamps One of my guitars Good Speakers
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I love to listen what the artist want, they are the artists, so i like to understand what they want, not like "we have this song" "let's mic all instruments" "mix as you want" "finish..."
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: If i could i would love to work with Paul McCartney, he is the meaning and real sound legend, he works with George Martin, he grow up in the studio, know everything about the process and i can imagine felt that "magic" in the studio, i think working with Sir Paul McCartney have to be work in other level in the studio, no rules, he is our Mozart. Also i would love to work with some Japanese artist that i love like Yoshiki from X-Japan, Hyde from Vamps/L'arc en ciel, Sugizo Luna Sea/X-Japan, and many many others.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: I love to work with 50's mic for Guitars, and Snare.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Production & Arrangements by guitar. Understand in a Movie what the director wanted or what kind of idea have in their mind.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I hope i bring the feeling that the band wants to show, i can do respecting the dynamics of the song, also i like to work if "the magic" can arrive, that special take, that special moment.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: The preproduction for me is the most important, prepare and fix/fit what we want and start the process before than put any mic or record any stuff.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I'm working in Hybrid process, my analog Console is a Yamaha M1516 from the 70's, also i have tube preamps from EMI/Abbey road, or Focusrite/Dbx, etc...
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Mainly the Beatles, Elvis, Paco de Lucía. About production Jack Joseph Puig or Eddie Kramer.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Actually i'm working with Pop/Rock/Heavy bands, i love to work with organic sound, real music, and make it bit old style, less Loops, less edit, etc... also i'm working as a music composer for branding and documentaries or Short movies.
