Interview with Cormac McMorrow

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Even though it was a personal project of mine, i was really happy with the last song i produced for myself with my own vocals. It is the song that is featured on the top of my profile and the song is called Lost Angels.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I am working on writing new material for myself and for other potential clients. I am mainly focused on creating demo productions currently , which is in my opinion a crucial step in the songwriting and production process.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I previously worked on a song called Trouble In Paradise with a wonderful producer named Charlie Westropp who is also on SoundBetter.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Blend because even though i work mainly in the box in Logic Pro X i still use microphones to capture my voice. Once i have the means i would expand my sonic palette by exploring more analog synths. I mainly use software sample libraries etc for the moment.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I promise that i will give it my all for those crucial lead vocal takes and for any additional takes until we get the right lead vocal line that you are happy with.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I love the variety. Each song has its own flavour and own sonic identity.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Will you be able to sing this song in the original key !

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: The biggest misconception i think is that it is all fun and games. At the end of the day i love what i do but it is not always easy to stay emotionally aware all of the time so at times it can get confusing between just singing and singing with emotional impact.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What energy would you like me to bring to the song ? Which artist or group are you trying to stay in the region of ? What sounds inspire you the most ?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: I would recommend having a strong and clear vision for your song and what you think it will need most to bring out the best in the song.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: My shure sm7b. A guitar. A neve 1073 pre amp. A macbook pro. A midi keyboard.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I have been doing this for over 10 years. I began to sing when i was 16 and applied for a musical tv show when i was 18 and managed to get into the final 10 contestants on X - Factor France in 2011. Since then i have mainly been writing and recording my own songs and i also did a production course with Point Blank Music school in 2019.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: I would describe my style as mainly pop or singer / songwriter sounding but with hints of electronic music styles and also hip and r&b.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I would love to work with Dermot Kennedy. As we grew up with similar music backgrounds ( similar artists etc and busking on the streets ) i think he brings something really fresh to the singer / songwriter style and infuses so many other styles such as hip hop and r&b into the mix and thats why i would love to work on a project with him.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Melody is King , Lyrics are Queen and the arrangement is the support group for the song.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I usually work on pop and singer / songwriter types of music.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill is writing melodies i think and also my vocal presence in the higher register.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring a whole lot of energy with my voice. I hope as well to bring an emotional impact with my vocals and singing style. I have been compared to Dermot Kennedy , Ed Sheeran and Lewis Capaldi in terms of my vocals and melody writing.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I mainly work either from an instrumental which i will write a topline melody too and lyrics. Or i start from a melody idea and i branch out from there and think of what chords and sounds would compliment the melodies and lyrics.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I work in a home studio with a mac mini apple computer and Logic Pro X as my DAW of choice. I track using an apollo 8p audio interface and my microphone of choice is a shure sm7b with the soyuz mic launcher to add a bit of coloration and a gain boost.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Ryan Tedder , Rick Rubin , Louis Bell

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I mainly record vocals for demos and / or final productions.
