Interview with Tony Black

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I recorded ALL of Diary of Alicia Keys and mixed about half of it. I was her exclusive engineer from 2000-2005. After I left her projects I went on to launch my own production company and work with countless other artists on major and indie labels. I'm especially proud of the sound that I'm known for which has a connecting thread to all the projects I'm involved in.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: slow down the quick, brielle brown, leo sawikin, chris mardini, etc.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Digital, and analog. Whatever it takes...

  7. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  8. A: Probably that what mixers and producers do can recreate or reinvent what an artist is...I would hope that we only enhance the art.

  9. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  10. A: I prefer this to be unique to our conversation...it always is.

  11. Q: How would you describe your style?

  12. A: I think that my style is a reflection of the sound of the records I've made and continue to make. I strongly suggest listening to the past work of anyone you might consider working with and realize they/I DO have a "sound"...that will give you an idea of what to expect.

  13. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  14. A: The performance is everything.

  15. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  16. A: Mostly singer-songwriter projects and that includes hip-hop.

  17. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  18. A: I work for the art.

  19. Q: What's your typical work process?

  20. A: It starts with a conversation. Then, from there it usually involves a transfer of files, a mix, a conversation, etc. The loop continues until we are satisfied.

  21. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  22. A: I use everything available. I have my own rig that is constantly evolving. I don't apply the same process to any project. Transformation is neverending.

  23. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  24. A: I'm inspired by artists who are always moving forward. Artists with the drive and determination to challenge themselves, the music, and the audience.

  25. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  26. A: I mix. I produce. Aside from those two things, I guess I do whatever it takes for the artist, project or label to be fully satisfied with their product. I'll edit, tune, play instruments, program beats, etc.
