Interview with ceilingsintheireyes
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I got the chance to record vocals for an entire album for an artist called Dynamorphic. It’s melodic, fast metal with symphonic and electronic elements that suits powerful high cleans as well as the odd brutal unclean. Musically and stylistically it’s right up my street and I listen to that style myself so it was an absolute privilege to be able to work on it. And it came out absolutely brilliantly so I’m super proud of the work we did together. The album is called Roots if you’d like to look it up.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I will do everything in my power to give you vocals you’re happy with. As long as im able to do it, I will.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Creativity. I haven’t been in a band for a number of years now, life gets too busy sometimes to have that sort of commitment, although I hope to start one up again. But working as a freelancer vocalist let’s me indulge my creativity and have an outlet for my love of writing and recording and performing music and vocals. It’s also allowed me to work with some very talented musicians.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: They usually get all the info they need from my profile. But usually people will ask if I can do both cleans and uncleans - which I can! And if I can write them original lyrics - also yes!
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That anyone can do it. I mean technically that’s correct. But you can’t just do it without practicing. Like playing an instrument it takes practice. A LOT of practice.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I just need an mp3 of the track. Other than that all I need is any preference for style of vocals (cleans/uncleans etc), and any lyrical theme or subject matter you want me to write about.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Make sure you know what their voice sounds like. I have an example reel on my profile and can provide more examples if asked.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: A satellite phone to call for help!
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Over 10 years. Started a band back in 2010, toured and performed for the first time and did it over about 5 years. Met a lot of other musicians and artists and songwriters and I’ve really been able to hone and perfect my own style and voice.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Cleans: very clean, melodic, powerful, high range. Unclean: brutal. Guttoral lows and piercing highs.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: For anything clean, Andy Cizek. For anything unclean, Will Ramos.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: The better the quality of the performance going in, the better it’ll sound coming out at the end.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Typically metal and rock, but I’ve worked on all sorts
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My range. Whether it’s cleans or uncleans I can go low and I can go high and I can go anywhere in between. You’ll struggle to find a vocalist who can offer such powerful, melodic cleans and at the same time give you brutal death metal uncleans. I’d also say my imagination lyrically. In my spare time I like to write stories, mythologies, world building etc based on my own created fictions and also real world mythologies, folklore, stories etc
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Experience and range. I’ve been writing songs and working in music for over 10 years and I’ve really honed my own voice in that time. I’ve got a wide range in both clean and unclean vocals so I bring all that experience and versatility with me into every track.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I take the MP3 of the clients track and import it into my DAW. Then I’ll sit and pen out the structure of the track (verse, bridge, chorus sections etc), then I’ll either take the clients lyrical preference or theme or go through my never ending folders of lyrical inspiration content and start picking out words, sentences, subjects, themes, key words to use, and start going through the song section by section. I’ll usually make sure I get the lead vocal or top line done first then go back through it to layer it with harmonies and layers. I’ll usually double or triple track each vocal part to really flesh it out.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I use Logic Pro X as my DAW, then record with a Shure SM7b mic with a Cloudlifter into either an Audient iD4 or Scarlett Focusrite interface.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Clean singers in alternative, rock and metal like Andy Cizek, Brendon Urie, Spencer Sotelo, Craig Owens etc with that sort of wide powerful high range, bands that have that nice balance between powerful uncleans and melodic high cleans like Wage War, TDWP, Periphery etc, and then brutal extreme metal bands in the deathcore/death metal/black metal world for the range of brutal unclean vocals like Shadow of Intent, Lorna Shore, Behemoth, Suicide Silence, Brand of Sacrifice etc
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Typically in the rock/alternative/metal genres, but I’ve worked with artists in pop, acoustic, parody, EDM and all sorts!
