Interview with Jake Jon

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: Digital. No restrictions

  3. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  4. A: Feel free to come with ideas that you can’t necessarily sinh yourself, but also feel free to come over examples I work well like that. (as somebody who started off only playing the drums I understand what it’s like to not be able to articulate what you want)

  5. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  6. A: Computer, maschine 2, keyboard, mic, soundcsrd

  7. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  8. A: About 20 years. My process has been comparing myself to the greats and then trying to make my music great. To match it. Although the conclusion is I can only be me. Iron sharpens iron so I’m the best me 👌🏾

  9. Q: How would you describe your style?

  10. A: My vocal arrangement style is influenced by Michael Jackson, The Beach Boys, and of course Gispel Choir’s.

  11. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  12. A: Probably Kanye, Pharrell or Quincy Jones because these are the people who are capable of doing what hasn’t been done yet. And that’s my goal

  13. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  14. A: If it sounds good it’s technically right, but If it feels good it’s a hit

  15. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  16. A: It’s been quite varied not much hip-hop or RnB actually, recently in the country influenced track, a weird grungy/dance/drumNBass song and a jazz musical influenced hip hop track

  17. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  18. A: I would say either vocal arranging, top lining (with lyrics) Anyway rapping.

  19. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  20. A: It depends what I’m doing but when specifically talking about vocal arrangements, my job was to evoke emotion and create an atmosphere through: texture, warmth, (A haunting feeling if necessary) etc…

  21. Q: What's your typical work process?

  22. A: listen to the song, love it, (there’s always something to love about it even if it’s just the potential of it) look for pockets, and listen for melody is a potential melodies that can invoke great vocal arrangement. Feel it, enjoy it, (always enjoy it) and execute.

  23. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  24. A: It’s dope. All in the box, A few plug-ins, some fun toys from ‘native instruments’ but I’ve always been about the execution over the instruments/toys that are used.

  25. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  26. A: The obvious. Gospel music, Bob Marley, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Kanye, J Cole Brit Pop, Pop Music. (I’m producer and the rapper alongside the singer so that influences me a lot)

  27. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  28. A: Probably lead vocals and definitely putting the harmonies together throughout the track. this is something I do very easily and enjoy doing.
