Endorse Tim BrunsTim's work is absollutely fantastic! Everything comes back sounding top notch and his taste and abilities are professional and relevant for modern music. His versatility with instruments and genre make him my go-to guy. I can throw anything at him and it always comes back sounding better than anything I could dream up.
Interview with Tim Bruns
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Typically, i take a rough voice memo, demo, or song idea and build it into a fully produced track, in the direction of the artists vision.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I have been working with an artist named Brother Bird, she's a phenomenal songwriter and we've been able to take the production to some really unique and crazy places!
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am always working on my own music in some form!
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Arliss Albritton is great!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Either! I'm grateful for all the different tools that exist to make music!
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: i promise to work with the same pride i take in my own songs. I want my clients to always be as proud of their work as I am!
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love songs. i love being a part of the creation of songs and watching something go from an idea all the way to a finished production is something i will never stop loving.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: How long will it take? Because of my ability to work quickly i can, in most cases, get something back within a week from starting the project.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: As a someone who always focuses on the songs, i can play multiple instruments and mix my own productions as well.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What are your goals, and vision? what are some musical references that you like and what do you like about them? how do they connect with your own artistic vision?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: always be honest and confident with your vision! Trust your gut! it's better to ask for edits or changes than not to be completely happy with the final product.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My laptop of coarse, and a small interface. Sm7 for vocals and a guitar and keyboard would be plenty!
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started writing songs when i was in middle school, and over the years had several bands. in my early 20's a band i started called Churchill signed a record deal and from there I've just been able to build relationships in the industry, mainly starting as an artist and songwriter but i've been able to build my production and studio chops.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: i'm a pretty laid back, easy going person, but when it comes time to get work done i can get it done! my musical style is generally Commercial with a little bit of edge and uniqueness.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: There are so many artists i'd love to work with, but Justin Vernon of Bon Iver would be really fun! i'm fascinated by the sounds he makes and i'd love to learn from him!
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Be patient and don't over think!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I have been lucky enough to work across multiple genres including: Pop, Rock, Indie, Country, rap and R&B.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My sense of song is my strongest skill, whether it's helping a lyric or melody land in just the right way or making sure the track builds and flows well. For me it's always about the song!
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring song structure, as well as how to build the song in a way that keeps the listeners ear always intrigued while not 'over producing' the song.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: If it is a full production or building a track for a client, i like to have the basic chords, vocals vision from the artist, and then i take some time on my own to build out the track in a way that the client wants, and once that's done, i can go back and forth with the client and get it right in the sweet spot that the client and i am happy with! my goal is to always make the song shine through the production.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I run everything into Logic Pro. I have a handful of mics that get all the jobs i need done. i've got several guitars, a bass, and plenty of keyboards and synth sounds. I also have all the outboard gear i need in the box!
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Shawn Everett, Ethan Gruska, Jacquire King, Aaron Dessner
