Music mixing is the process of taking a multi track recording and 'mixing' it down to one single stereo track (left and right). Before mixing you have a multi track session – for example 12 individual drum tracks, 6 vocal tracks, a bass track, 2 guitar tracks, 4 keyboard tracks... After mixing you would have one stereo file. This audio file is almost the final product for distribution. A song is truly 'done' once the mix is mastered!
Mastering is a bridge between the mixing and music distribution!
Some of the steps in the mastering process:
- Match the character of the songs so the whole album feels cohesive.
- Optimize the lodness to compete with other songs in the same style.
- Sound improvement, matching challenges such as noise and muddy frequencies.
- Correct unbalanced in stereo image as well as adjusting EQ, clarity, heat, punch and snap.
