Interview with Tyler Rifley

  1. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  2. A: If you hire me to mix your project, or produce your project, that means my name is on it too. Because of that, I’m going to give you nothing less than perfection.

  3. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  4. A: I like that I’m always creating something new.

  5. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  6. A: Q: Do you really know what all those knobs and buttons do on your soundboard? A: Why yes of course :)

  7. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  8. A: Manley Ref C, J45 Acoustic Guitar, Computer, Interface, SSL G Bus Compressor.

  9. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  10. A: I started playing guitar and writing songs at age 11. I began learning sound when I was 14 after going to the Recording Studio for the first time. After that, I interned at 2 different sound companies in Alaska starting at age 16, to work in local productions and help set up and operate the sound for concerts that would come to town. I still freelance as a LIVE engineer. Starting at age 22, I worked as the head LIVE sound engineer for multiple venues and churches across our city. These churches helped me start school and build my first commercial recording studio. I also have an associates degree in music production from the Los Angeles Recording School which I started at age 22.

  11. Q: How would you describe your style?

  12. A: I’m influenced most by modern pop/rock, CCM, and country. My style is unique, in that I’m always chasing a new and fresh sound, while keeping things modern and up to industry standards.

  13. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  14. A: I’d like to find a new up-and-coming artist who is on brink of breaking out, but who is also on the same wavelength as me and work with them on their first big project.

  15. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  16. A: There is no such thing as fix it in the mix. A great recording by great musicians, producers, and a very talented artist who knows their craft inside and out… is PARAMOUNT or the mix won’t do anything for you. Also, the gear doesn’t matter as much either. It just helps you do your job better. The artist and musicians MATTER!

  17. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  18. A: All of it! And I love making all kinds of music even if it isn’t what I grew up on.

  19. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  20. A: Skills with an S. Mixing and Songwriting are the top 2.

  21. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  22. A: I bring an unbiased creative ear, and pretty cool mixing skills! But this ear happens to be good at producing records and is an artist too… and so I know what artists are looking for, and I know what they’re trying to communicate because I started as an artist and I still am one.

  23. Q: What's your typical work process?

  24. A: I like to hear a demo first, whether it’s production or mixing. and hear from the client what they’re looking for. As a mixing engineer, I’m always hearing what the final mix is going to sound like in my head before we even begin working on the project. This helps me decide which tools to use or not to use in order to take the song where it needs to go.

  25. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  26. A: I currently work out of Midnight Sound Studios in Anchorage, Alaska, which is a recording and mixing facility. We have a hybrid studio set up. We are always using a blend of analog and digital gear when recording and mixing. See our gear list!

  27. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  28. A: Recording, mixing and mastering. I work with a variety of local musicians and non-local musicians that come up to my neck of the woods from time to time to record with me.

  29. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  30. A: I’m really proud of the album and singles I have produced for Andrea Shelly. I was the producer, recording engineer, and mixing engineer for most of her songs from 2022 to 2025. Her music has such a cool variety of sounds in it. I just love listening to it.

  31. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  32. A: I’m working on many projects with clients from Alaska, but we are working in collaboration with Sound Better engineers and musicians to accomplish the highest of qualities!

  33. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  34. A: Not yet!

  35. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  36. A: Both both both! Always both! Analog does have a vibe to it that digital can’t quite achieve yet. But recording and saving a project in a digital format so that it can be recalled is extremely important to me.

  37. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  38. A: The producer part. If you hire me as a producer because you like the style of music I produce, rather than just my style of mixing, you’re hiring me to essentially direct how the recording process of your song goes from beginning to the end.

  39. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  40. A: I usually ask for them to give me examples of songs and mixes that they really like that they want to sound similar to. I do this before producing a song and before mixing a song.

  41. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  42. A: Make sure you do your research, listen to the sound and styles of multiple different engineers and producers and then choose who best fits what you’re looking for.

  43. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  44. A: Artists such as Kenny Chesney. And some more but I’ll just say Kenny Chesney, he’s definitely my fave. Engineers and producers that inspire me are guys like Greg Wells, Andrew Schepps, Chris, Lord algae, I really enjoy watching Phineas do his thing too.
