Interview with Friedrich Rexer
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Whatever the song needs. Mostly digital, though.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Getting to know a lot of artists, listening to music all day, every day.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The biggest misconseption is that it will cost you a lot of money.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I wanna hear your story. Whats your vision for your project? Where can I assist you? How can I help?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Don't hesitate! Tell me about your vision, even if we never work together we still had nice a conversation.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Laptop with Ableton(&Splice), an apollo twin, a nice fender stratocaster.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started my first band when I was 12. We recorded our own demos and records. At 16 I started to record my friends bands. I started touring as a drummer in a pop punk band when I was 18. When the band broke up and I did'nt wanna be at home I would tour with other artists I started as the merch guy and quickly switched to doing live sound. A couple of years later I started my first studio, while still touring as a front of house sound guy from time to time. In 2020, I went full time with the studio.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Alternative Pop. Everything I like has obvious pop qualities, while being something unique.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with Taylor Swift because she managed to change her style a couple of times always ending up being successful and genre defining with her work. I wanna produce Chance, The Rapper because I love rap and I love gospel. I also wanna work with FEVER 333 because they are just crazy. Oh, and I'd love to do a Taking Back Sunday record, because I love them.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Mostly indie pop and german rap. Sometimes rock.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is that I actually listen to the people I work with. I really care about you and you art.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Whatever you need me to. I am really good in making a full, finieshed track out of a piano or guitar demo, but I can also take a step back, letting you be creative and just helping you shaping your ideas into finished songs.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: We talk about your vision. What do you have in mind? How do you sound? Who do you want to reach? We plan the project. We agree on a price, set up a timeline with deadlines, we book sessions and musicians etc. We create. Maybe we work together in person, maybe I work from my studio and send you files. I deliver. Your finished project is saved in the cloud, where you can acces it at any time. I keep you posted at every stage, giving you the confidence that you will get exactly what you want.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio is a small, cozy space, suited for hard work. My main instrument these days is Ableton Live and I really know how to play it.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Jack Antonoff, Romil Hemnani, Andrew Scheps, Kanye West.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I produce and mix music for artists. Every project is different: sometimes I write or co-write a song with an artist, produce and record that song and send it off for mixing and mastering, sometimes I'am the one mixing somebody elses song, sometimes I write, produce and mix the song. Lately people have been asking my to master their music as well.
