Interview with Vocxls
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Feel free to ask as many questions as you need to feel comfortable. Your music is like your little baby, you don't want to hire just any babysitter. You want to make sure that your baby is in good hands.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Laptop (with my plugins), Neumann U87, Beyerdynamic DT 1990 pro headphones, Midi keyboard, UAD Apollo Twin X
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: This is such a difficult question man! There are a lot of incredible artists out there and we would love to collaborate with all of them. The most recent artist we discovered that we think are very cool are Emotional Oranges and Monsune.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: The concept is the most important thing to have clear. This is the one thing that you need to be checking at all stages of making a song. Ask yourself this question: is this sound, lyric, chord progression, cool effect, mix decision, helping my song? If the answer is not a confident yes, keep trying.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Our main focus is on pop, rock, and electronic music.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: We believe that communication is the most important skill, we try our best to understand what the client wants. The better we communicate will impact the final product.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Our answer can be very different from each different project we work on. On the bigger picture, we can say that concept and taste is our biggest contribution. This kind of work is not in reality about the technical skills, when we work on music, we need to realize that we are creating something that's alive and has a soul and needs to be approached accordingly.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: This question depends on the gig. For vocal tuning, the first step is to listen and understand the concept of the song. Not all the songs require the same tuning. In pop and EDM for example, the vocals are normally very polished so the tuning needs to be very precise and transparent. Once the concept is clear, we then manually tune the vocals accordingly. Finally, we make a bounce and send it back to the client.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Most of the work is done inside the box, our main DAW is Pro Tools but we also own Ableton Live and Logic. For vocal tuning, we currently own Melodyne 5. In our plug-in repertoire, you can find different manufacturers as Waves, Sonnox, McDsp, and iZotope.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: We can talk about this question for hours. There are a lot of people who inspire us every day and it is very hard to just narrow it down. However, to name just a few: Daft Punk, Tony Maserati, Rick Rubin, and Fiona Apple.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Since we are a duo, we can cover a variety of things. Outside of Soundbetter we have recurring gigs as recording and mixing engineers, session musicians, and producers. With Soundbetter we are specializing in vocal production.
