Interview with Samm Musick
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: 100% effort every time!
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Taking a bare bones vocal guitar demo and turning it into a masterpiece!
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: You are investing in you. Find someone who will give 100% and don't cut corners. Recordings last a long time!
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Computer, Headphones. Mic, Midi Keyboard, Guitar (Fender Strat)
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started designing and running studios in Chicago after getting my music degree from Northwestern University. In 2004 I moved to Nashville and have been producing ever since.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Take chances and think outside the box. Make art!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Pop, Rock, Country, Singer-Songwriter, Americana-Folk
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I often help with songwriting and vocal performance. I'm a vocal coach so this comes in handy! Getting a great vocal can make or break a track! Equally important is having a great song! As they say in Nashville, "You can't polish a terd!" Haha. So often clients will need help taking their melodies and lyrics to the next level. We will listen to lots of reference tracks to pick the sound the client desires. We want every sound to be quality and create a competitive track that has #1 potential. I work with top musicians in Nashville and have a great pool of talent to pull from. I often will play bass, guitars and keys on tracks but I prefer calling in others when the budget allows. Its always good to have various creative voices and ears on a track.
