Canvas Portfolio

Professional Designer + Animator with over 10 years experience working with musicians, filmmakers, agencies, brands, and artists of all kinds and sizes. Clients include: HBO, Netflix, Square Enix, NBCUniversal, Usher, Hershey's, and many more. Big fan of abstract, surreal, minimal, warm, and nostalgic / vintage influenced design.

Hello, I'm Matt! Perhaps more than any other artist, I love collaborating with musicians to help distill their sound into a visual form. My visual style tends to be abstract, minimal, warm, and nostalgic. My workflow includes all collaborators throughout the process -- I'll send frequent mood boards, screenshots, test renders, and anything else I think may help guide the project towards it's finish line, assuring that you're excited before moving on. With musicians, I've worked on everything from album art to tour projection visuals. I'm fluent with After Effects, Photoshop, and Illustrator. I am very familiar with Maxon Cinema 4D and Octane Renderer for 3D content. I've worked with artists of all sizes -- garage bands to Usher. Student films to HBO. I've been a part of projects that have won awards from Cannes and Adweek. I'd be thrilled to be trusted with your projects in any way, so please reach out and we'll get started today!

I'd love to hear about your project. Click the 'Contact' button above to get in touch.

An excellent experience from start to finish. Matt is great at working with suggestions and his prices are very fair as well. We hired him for three Spotify Canvases for the new We Are The Empty album and they really helped bring the project's visual aspect to life. Don't hesitate to work with him because he is great.

Interview with Matt Rudinski

  1. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  2. A: I try to bring what you see in your head into reality.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Lots of Canvases for lots of artists, thankfully!

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Any of the SoundBetter members in my reviews!

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: That they'll get a Canvas that accurately embodies both the aesthetic they are looking for, as well as fits the themes of the song.

  9. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  10. A: A boat?

  11. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  12. A: Tame Impala for one!

  13. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  14. A: If I made music I would!

  15. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  16. A: I was given the opportunity to art direct and animate for a branded conference with CNN and Square Enix for their game Deus Ex.

  17. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  18. A: Analog for sure. There's a warmth there that's gotten easier to replicate, but somehow you can always tell if it's not originally analog.

  19. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  20. A: Q: "How long would ______ take?" A: "Depends on a huge number of variables!"

  21. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  22. A: Render times are assumed to be lower than they are.

  23. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  24. A: I'd say don't be afraid of having too many references or specifics you'd like to achieve. As much as we can reduce the number of variables, the more we can dial in the details.

  25. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  26. A: Visually -- Tycho, Tame Impala

  27. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  28. A: Turning dials and sliding sliders to get the exact look I'm going for.

  29. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  30. A: First and foremost, if they have any visual references in mind.

  31. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  32. A: High school video class > Enrolling in a video editing degree program in college > switching to an interactive media program > switching to a animation and motion media program > graduating > working in LA as a motion graphic designer > working in NYC as a motion graphic designer > ??. I've been at this for a decade now!

  33. Q: How would you describe your style?

  34. A: Warm, bold, nostalgic, clean.

  35. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  36. A: I've worked most with indie and electronic artists.

  37. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  38. A: When working with other artists, I feel like I have a strong ability to get on the same creative wavelength they are on. Put simply, I can get what you have in your head to appear on the screen. That, and replicating the nostalgic warmth of vintage design.

  39. Q: What's your typical work process?

  40. A: If there isn't a desired design approach or brief, I like to bunker down with the music and sketch / jot notes down as I think of anything -- specific visuals, general vibes I get, plugins I could use, anything at all. Once that's done, I'll come back with a proposed plan of attack, including moodboards full of visual references. Once approved, I'll start to create the visuals, providing screenshots, test renders, and more until the process is completed and you're satisfied!

  41. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  42. A: I'm the guy with too many monitors and the too expensive keyboard. PC desktop setup with gigabit fiber upload speeds, soon to be NVIDIA RTX 3080, and AMD Ryzen 5950X. Full Adobe Creative Cloud suite, Maxon Cinema 4D, Octane Renderer, just about any plugin you can think of.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I'll help you distill your song / album / vibe into a visual form that you'll feel excited to have fill the screen while people listen to your music. I've become a relative "jack of all trades" when it comes to digital media art. I started as a video editor, worked into motion graphic design, then did more traditional graphic design, and lately find myself working more in 3D. Most of my work currently comes from film + tv trailers and promos.

  • New PC, Faster Renders -- Coming soon!Nov 23, 2020

Once I can get my hands on parts for a new PC (everyone under the sun seems to be buying these parts right now as well), I'll have a PC that's 5x-6x more powerful than what I'm currently working on. That means faster renders and faster turnaround times in most cases!
