Interview with ALBATROSS RECORDINGS
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Very high energy and wide
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Neck Deep! I met them a little while back and chatted with their bassist Seb about production, it made me feel extra driven to get to a level where I could do that.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: If it sounds great before EQ and compression then it probably doesn't need any.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Rock and metal mainly but have also had folk, country and prog clients in the past.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Drum mixing
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I have an ear for a well polished track and have the know how to do the same. I've always prided myself on how I shape sounds using EQ and compression to get a clear tone.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Typically I start by organising a session intro groups (drums, guitars, etc) and labelling in a way that makes sense to me. Setting levels is then the first real bit of mixing I do so that I find a nice balance of all the instruments before any processing is done. After that I begin to EQ each channel and compress where needed, once each channel sounds the way I want it to I'll add reverbs, delays and saturation among other things on busses.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I run Logic Pro X with various high end plug ins from waves, fabfilter and valhalla. All my mixes are played back to me on Kali LP-6 monitors and I use a Focusrite Saffire 6 interface.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I'd say Andrew Schepps for his in the box mixes on headphones. He just proves that it really is the ear not the gear that makes record sound so great and is very inspiring particularly if you only have a very minimal set up.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Most of my work is in mixing and mastering however I do some studio recording for bands from time to time as well as session work on guitar and bass.
