Interview with Vincenzo Avallone

What are you working on at the moment?
i'm finishing Burning in Deception's debut ep where im also the guitar player and the producer and also i'm about to release the full album of brazilian symphonic Metal band Ruins of Elysium
Analog or digital and why?
Digital recordings are now extremely mature and great sounding, they also provide amazing flexibility and room for improvements
What do you like most about your job?
i Like to see the song take shape under my very own eyes and all the efforts to put the pieces togheter finally come into place
What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
i would advice to send me DI tracks for guitars so i can do reamps with my Mesa amp and cabs and also to create an organized project folder
If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
my audio card,a poweful laptop, great monitors,my 7 string and my classical guitar
What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
i've been playing guitar since 2001 on both electric and classical, after studying at Berklee College of music i opened my studio Deep Water Recordings in 2011 and since then i work as producer and mixing engineer
Can you share one music production tip?
the key to a good mix is balance,no matter how fancy or modest your tracks are if you create a balance inside your mix,it will sound good.
What type of music do you usually work on?
i usually mix all kinds of metal but also rock and orchestral music
What's your strongest skill?
my strongest skill is patience and my almost obsessive goal of perfection..the perfect mix doesn't exist but you can bad ill not sleep until i get close to it ahah
What do you bring to a song?
i try to unlock the hidden potential of every song and even add my own tracks if i feel it needs it,if the customer allows it of course.
What's your typical work process?
i usually receive a zipped folder from the customer firstly i set the tempo map and prepare the drums, after drums i put bass and guitars and finally synths and vocals
What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
I'm a great fan of Devin Townsend and his use of elaborated synths and echo along with extreme vocals and guitars i also love Dream Theater expecially the Train of Thought album
Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
Usually when a band hires me they sent a zipped folder with prerecorded tracks and i produce, mix and master the song, sending the audio result in real time until the customer is satisfied. sometimes i also add extra tracks if the song needs and rarely i do lyrics videos too
